1998 Taurus starts but dies when shifted in gear
My 98 taurus died last night while driving, the engine stalled while sitting at a light. I put it in park, started it back up then shifted from park to drive, the car stalled again. Repeatedly it did this until I had to call AAA to have it towed as the car would start but refused to drive.
I have a factory theft light that was flashing on the dashboard a couple of days ago, could that be a part of the problem, but if it was I would think that the car wouldn't start at all. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Thanks CJ |

Re: 1998 Taurus starts but dies when shifted in gear
does it struggle then cut out or does it cut out like you just turned the car off?

As soon as you put it in gear it gives a little struggle, the car shakes a little and then it dies. It doesn't matter if it is put in reverse or drive for it to die.
Hope that helps CJ |

I just experienced this same thing two days ago, with one exception – my O/D light came on and was flashing. It then went off, but the problem continued. I have been told by two mechanics that it is a problem with the torque converter (?), some internal part in the transmission. They are telling me that they cannot really determine what the extent of the problem is until they take out the transmission, but the fix could be as drastic as re-building the transmission. My symptoms are the car idles but as soon as I shift it in gear, it sputters, shakes and dies. If I quickly press on the gas, I can go, but as soon as the car comes to a stop, if in gear, it shakes and dies.
I don't know if your problem is the same, and for your sake I hope not, but it might be worthwhile to have a transmission shop check it out. Good luck. |

The exact same problem as in my car. I have just had it checked by a specialized Ford mechanic and it turns out to be the converter, and unfortunatly, the fix is going to cost much more than the car is worth, ($1500-$2000).
Looks like I have to splurge and buy a new car , any thoughts on the VW Jetta TDI.
