takeoff

I have an odd problem.... I have to floor the gas pedal in my 1989 Toyota Camry (4cyl 2.0) to make it take off so that I can get into 20MPH traffic easily. Once I get it going it really takes off. Is this something to worry about? It does have 203,850 miles on it. Can't even make it spin tires.

I also have another question: how much horsepower does my 20. engine have? I also have a 1998 Camry 2.2 4cyl. How much HP does that have? ----I know that this isn't a Corolla forum, but how much HP does a 1997 Toyota Corolla 1.6L have? 5spd.

Thx!

Your 1989 Camry has 120 horsepower if I remember correctly (115 in California). Unless there is something mechanically wrong with your car then there's no need to floor the gas pedal just to jump into slow traffic. The double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder engine you have will give you the impression of slow acceleration from a dead stop and then it will speed way up after you get going. This is the nature of this type of motor and it's nothing to be concerned about obviously. With a car with that many miles on it I would certainly want to take it quite easy and ensure I'd get regularly scheduled oil and transmission fluid changes among other normal maintenance.

I'm not sure about your 98 Camry but if it is the same 2.2 engine I had in my 92 then you have 135 horsepower. My 03 4-cyl Camry has a 2.4 engine and has 157 horsepower; just for comparison.
