1993 Intrepid powers out

My Intrepid has 290000 km or about 174000 miles. I am the original owner and have had numerous problems over the years, mostly minor.

The latest problem is it powers out for a second or two when driving down the highway. Usually does this one to three times and then is fine. The worst for me lasted about 5 seconds and was almost like the engine had shut right off and then came back on and was fine (while at highway speeds).

Yesterday my wife went out of town only a few miles and as she turned a corner accelerated and at about 60 km/hr the oil light came on, the cruise light started blinking and powerd down to a complete stop. She turned the key off (thinks the engine was still running) and shortly after started it up and it was fine.

This car is near the end of its life, it is basicly our beater car and I do not want to start spending lots on it. I know of lots of problems other Intrepid owners are having and I can see it nickle and diming us to death.
Any help on what might be acting up would be appreciated. I am thinking computer/electronic/sensor or ????

P.S. One more thing, if anyone has a clunking noise coming from the front end and isn't sure what it is they may want to check the mounting plates for the struts.
Our Intrepid is making a loud clunking noise when braking, turning corners, hiting bumps and accelerating. The mecanics said it is where the struts meet the mounting plates and would only be a cosmetic fix (not important). Being the fix will cost what the car is worth I have decided to leave it. They said it wasn't a safety issue...they better be right!

In your condition, it sounds like you have a loose bulkhead connector going from your firewall to the interior of the car. If that connector is loose, whenever you go around a corner, hit a bump or etc. that connector will jiggle back and forth until it makes a good connection. What you can do is go to a mechanic you trust and have him check all the electrical connectors, mainly your bulkhead connector, to see if anything is loose.

I have the same shutdown problems with my 94 3.3l intrepid. I have had my problem happen on the Hwy, Sitting in the driveway, and sitting in traffic. Diag codes have given me in the past (24 - TPS) , replaced it , still the problem persists. Will check the Bulkhead next. Any other suggestions greatly appreciated!!

Hi guys.

I was able to find someone with the same problem on the internet. He replace the Crankshaft and Camshaft sensors on his 97 Intrepid and no more problems!!! So I went ahead and replaced my Crankshaft sensor only ($30) and relatively easy to get to, and I haven't had any problems since for 2 weeks now. If it should arise again, I will keep you posted.
