Ok, I've got a 92 civic and this problem started happening when I replaced my rear shoes. I can use my ebrake but only on slight inclines. I adjusted the handle and I get 7-10 clicks out of it. I figure it may just be that the shoes don't have enough contact. I replaced my shoes about 2 weeks ago. If you have any knowledge of this it would be really helpful. Thanks for taking your time to read this.

Re: Emergency brake won't hold
Not to insult your intelligence with cars, but did you bleed the brakes completely afterwards? If so then all you may need to do is keep adjusting the line until it pulls tighter.

Re: Emergency brake won't hold
Yeah, figured someone would ask that. I double bled my brakes and pulled the line till I got like 1 click out of it, still no difference. Thanks though.

Did you replace all the hardware?

Re: Emergency brake won't hold
no, I didn't have the money at the time. I think that the problem may be that it is only holding one wheel. When I ebrake the right side lifts up a little while the other doesn't. When it's not raining I'm gonna check that out.

Re: Emergency brake won't hold
Sounds like the shoes are too far from the edge of the drum. Did you check the self-adjuster bolt? You may need to turn it some to give the assembly a wider diameter. The shoes should be just about touching the inner edge of the drum, so they don't have far to go when you pull the e-brake handle.

Re: Emergency brake won't hold
Yeah, I figured that, I thought the self adjuster was just that though, a self adjuster. BUt I will take a look at it tomorrow mornin.

Re: Emergency brake won't hold
Make sure the little metal tab that's supposed to hold the gear in place (on the self-adjuster bolt) is on right. That's what lets the e-brake adjust itself tighter while keeping it from turning back the other way and letting the shoes get loose.
