The Trans Am's all had functional cowl induction hoods then. Even the LG4 versions (this was the base 140 hp engine versus the optional L69 190 hp engine, both engines are rated around 240ft lbs of torque) the only "rare" part is that maybe it still works.. They opened up under WOT via an under hood solenoid. otherwise they were closed and sucked air in like any other car of the time...
The car is worth what the buyer is willing to pay for it. in this case, $1800. If the car is a genuine Recaro, 15th anniversary edition or Mecham T/A, it should be worth more, depending on how original/ complete it is. If you have a complete running car that is not beat to the ground then you got a good deal. Also, overall condition/ complete the car is and the options it has will help determine the value. does it have the optional ground F/X ( W62 aero package)? Yes- in 1984 the Ground F/X were optional. Later years they were standard equipment. Does it have T-tops? The '84 Trans Am's even had optional rare stereo equipment for them. some had power hatches, power seats, all sorts of goodies... And, IMO, the color will help determine value. The '84 trans AM came in a variety of colors, and that was compounded with the optional ground f/x too. I think either the black or red cars are hte best looking...
Dd you buy this car as an investment or to drive it?
The mileage is nice and low, but how is the rest of the car? Is it complete? How is the interior?
If you plan to keep it spend 35$ or so and go to the pontiac Historical services and get the history on your car. It's well worth it. You'll get a copy of the original windwo sticker, you'll get lots of info on your car, where it was sold, etc... Neat stuff.
I think you'll see the value of the aerlier 3rd gen trans Ams start to climb in the near future. I think they are at their low point right now. Unfortunately, these cars are overshadowed by later GTA's and other Trans Ams with tuned port injection. Plus, many people are turning these into Knight Rider clones, and the fact that many of these cars are pretty much used up and being crashed, parted, or otherwise junked will make them fairly rare. Interior parts are already hard to find for the 82-84 Trans AM because the originals are made of cheap plastic that breaks and they aren't being reproduced yet, so they are already HTF in good shape. If your car is original and complete, I'd keep it that way if I were you. While these may never see the value of an '89 Pace car they are unique and have much more character than the later 85-92 models. Keep in mind there aren't that many '84 Trans Ams ever made let alone in decent shape with low miles.
