Need some quick help please..

I am going tommorrow to look at a Rodeo. Its 98 2wd 4cyl. 5 speed. I have spent the last hour or so looking over the threads to get a feel for the problems with these trucks, so far they dont look to bad. My main question is about this combo. Most of the threads are about the V6/AT setups, which makes sense they were far more popular. So whats the story with the 4cyl/5sp? Any other things I should look for while I am at it other than the normal things for a used car. I am going to be putting a lot of miles on this truck, mainly city, a bit of highway aswell.

Sorry for the long post. Thanks alot for the help.

Justin

I would personally stay away from the 2.2L. They have issues with the timing belt flying off about every 30K miles & trashing the valvetrain. IIRC- it has someting to do with the idler/tensioner setup on these engines. The 2.2L is a GM design used only by 1998-2002 rodeos (maybe 2003), daewoo and holden (little front wheel drive cars). You don't save that much in gasoline with this engine + it is totally gutless. Unless you can get this rodeo REALLY cheap, I'd stay away from the 2.2L.
G/luck

If you test drove it & like it, go for it. $4800 doent buy you much these days! I personally would spend another grand or two & get a comparable 3.2L. If you buy the 2.2L, get aquainted with the timing belt setup & learn to check for & recognize the signs of a near failure, I dunno exactly what that is on this engine- I assume a wobbly/loose idler wheel or weak tensioner, but loosing the t-belt will strand you & trash your valves ($$$$). Not a good day .

G/luck!

Re: Need some quick help please..

i have 5g's. its either this or get a ranger and keep my car. I need a SUV or truck for work. I do not want to drive a truck everyday with a ladder rack on it. So its either this or an Explorer with over a 100k+.

Re: Need some quick help please..

I ended up getting it. It had broken the T-belt. They rebuilt the head new belt, new idlers, new tires. It actually was a 99 not a 98 with 82K on it. I got it for 4500. I think I got a pretty good deal on it. Let me know what you think.

Not a bad deal. If you get 2yrs out of it with out having to put anything out of the ordinary into it, that's less than $200/mo. Not too shabby for a newer vehicle IMHO.
G/luck!

I dont have any pics, I need to get a card reader for my digi. Its grey, I am giving it 1,000 mile road test right now going back to school for homecoming. It would do 80-85 easier than I thought it would.
