83 3/4 ton. 350 mod help

I just got the beast, it used to be a diesel, so no need to smog it. I'm wondering what mods I should do first. It has a quadra-jet and stock for a chevy engine of that year everywhere else, except no smog equipment. It was a crate engine installed a few years back, so i imagine it'll handle anything I can throw at it. It really needs a tuneup at the moment, anyone have any simple guides for someone who has never tuned a carb, much less a quadra-jet (from what i've read so far....it makes no sense). It has 4.10s w/ 14 bolt rear end, and a 6" lift. I'm just trying to get it enough HP to smoke those tires. It has an electronic ignition, too. I was thinking about headers, but don't know what brand to go with. Since no cat's neccessary i was thinking about some big tubes (2 1/2"-3") out to the back with flowmasters(or a better one if someone has a better idea). Right now the truck runs like poo poo, if you stomp on it while idling the reverb(the time after you left off) causes it to die out, and then come back. Any help to tune this bad boy, and mod. help is greatly appriciated.

Sounds like a accelerator pump, but could be alot of things. Re-build a Quadrajet 4 bbl. ....you in for a project there, I don't reccomend getting inside these carbs even if you are familar with the unit.Pay a carb shop to do this, it's no Holley, where u can do all ajustments in about 10 mintes with carb installed.Just do a complete basic tune up then go from there.I never hurts the pocket book to do the basics. heres a old timer's trick look down carb and gas it with finger real quick, and umm not while running.
