I cant beleive the lousy mileage!!

I hope that you might be able to be able to help....
If you didnt know I am a fist time driver/owner of something other then a domestic. I am unhappy to state that I get about half the mileage that I got in my 5.0 mustang with much less of the bang for the gasoline buck! Granted that the Ford didnt corner whatsoever... but I think that I must be having some overlooked situation for me to top to 21 gallons for some 312 miles. Mustang did 250 for about 12.5 gallons.

When idle I DO NOT SEE A PUDDLE OF GAS FORM UNDER THE CAR!

Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'm contemplating a few possibilities. Its probably long overdue for a fuel filter, but I dont think that would affect mileage..might help for performance though.

Possibly, Travis could have sold me an off odometer gear that would affect my results. I'll have to try to take a known distance trip to verify calibration.

Fuel injectors, I hear tell of some company that will clean and calibrate my feul injectors for about 25 each. Hundred dollars. Performance and mileage improvement?

I did the FR Wilk na shutter adjustment. Made the driving expierence better, but did it cut my mileage GREATLY?

The A/C is in process of repair....... I have very high side pressures and awaiting an expansion valve....Florida, I run the A/C constantly.The mustang A/C didnt work.

I hope you guys can tell me how to adjust the flute a stat and tune my roundtuit to acheive the 57 MPG I was promised by the previous owner.

Compression were consistant and 120 or was it 140 but all the same.
Plugs burn was also happy (just right cocoa color)

Should I gut the cat?

I forgot, us cars have the cats. have you checked the lambda sensor? And as any porsche ever done 57mpg?

I was goofing about the 57 MPG........ I do have a window sticker from when the car was at the dealership for sale in 87... it claimed I think 34MPG highway..... I suspect that isn't realistic either.

14 just seems like I should be able to improve upon.

Tell me about lambda ... is that what we call O2 sensor? In the exhaust just aft of the firewall. How do I check it?

Yes thats it, a o2 sensor. We have a simple test light, and it just clips on the main output signal wire and you put the other to a good earth, if the light on the tester flashes its working ok, if it doesn't flash, then it's goosed. In the uk we can get these testers for about £14 so there not that expensive. the 02 sensor part no is (944 606 135 02) they also have a temp sensor in the exhaust on internal prefix (J) 1988 part no (951 606 019 00) but may be turbo only with the 951 in the part no. if the o2 sensor or this temp sensor faulty, they could give false readings to the ECU, thus making it overfuel. I'm trying to find a DME Temp sender, but cant find one as of yet, this would cause the same problem.

Yes, something is not right...

My old 86 944 would get around 20 city and 25-26 hiway...

I get 18-20 in city and 24-30 on hiway.

I once tested how many MPG the A/C uses and learned (now every one is different so take this for the grain of salt that it is) that my car ate another 5 MPG using the A/C on highway driving. Of course there were outside air temp differences, humidity, blah, blah, blah.


Things to ponder:
1) If your o2 sensor was dead, the DME would go rich, very rich as in black smoke on take off and dark plugs.
2) Gutted cats are loud as they are a very good sound dampner and if you don't get every piece out, you get a nasty raspy rattling noise. Origional cats flow very well and only gain you a little power. (Hey, every little bit helps)

A bad fuel filter wouldnt create such a dramatic loss in mileage, but a new one would give an extra 6 to 13hp. I would check the fuel injectors and maybe have them professionally cleaned. Even if this does not solve the problem its not going to hurt the car. If this doesnt solve it, your piston rings may be going bad.

ps...has the car flooded recently or sputtered to a start?

I happened to pull a dipshit not too long ago, I was awaiting traffic on a mild hill..... and when I saw that i was'nt going to make my left anytime soon, I absent mindedly just dumped the clutch to starteling halt.... I guess I thought it was in neutral. Needless to say I was flooded for a few moments.

I also , occasionally, get this weird hydraulic lock when starting (only sometimes)...... I kinda ponder that possibly an injector might leak fuel into a cylinder after shut down. Then when a hour or two later I go to start its like a cats paw is stuck in the flywheel... (one cylinder is hard to compress one time)

Car is great though, dependable, when I did compressions (two months ago) they were consistant at (I forget) but I think around 130.... all four within a pound or so. Plugs burning cocoa brown/grey.... I haven't checked them recently. Performance hasnt deteriorated for me..... I'm just becomming aware of a poor mileage condition.

Any suggestion on an aftermarket injector or should I send them out for a hundred bucks.

You might try a fuel injection cleaner first...I think Porsche actually does recommend the Techron product...
I would pour a bottle in when your almost empty, then add a 1/2 tank of gas and run her down to around a 1/8 tank...This worked well with my old 86 944...

yeah...if your fuel inj. are causing that much problem you should really have them professionally cleaned as opposed to using the fluid you put in your gas tank.

Has anybody had any luck with a kit for rebuild? I saw some offered for auction for about 7.99 plus s/h
I've never even seen more then the top of it (never actually held one in my hand) supposedly it includes all the seals and instructions. I have some ultrasonic cleaning equipment at work for parts cleaning (and i dont mean jewelery)

What I dont have is a pressure source to inspect the spray pattern and flow, so I may let the experts do it.

Fuel filter will be on my next rec sheet from penguin parts.... or that other bird.

I think the O2 sensor makes a millivolt charge that is read by the brain.... anybody have a spec on that sensor?

The injector seal kits are usually needed for air leaks around the injector port or fuel leaks at the fuel rail. They contain no internal seals.

I remember a while ago using some clear hosing and adapters to rig up a system for back flushing the injectors with compressed air and solvent. You could probably use a nine volt battery to flush solvent through to see the spray pattern.

I'm gonna get the kits and see what it says. I am interested in operating voltage if you can find it. At work I often set up different types of bench tests.

How about a source for either aftermarket, re-man or new injectors.

Bex put some 9k miles on grand am in 4 months, so when a 88 civic came available for her 100 mile/day trip we jumped on it.
