Ive got an 88 350 regular cab c1500 and I'm replacing the carpet that was damaged from some water leak. I changed the heater core about 2 months ago to stop the leak and aparently it has stopped, but when I took out the carpet today, it was soaking wet underneath the jute padding. Is this normal, or is there any other place that it can be leaking from. The paint is pretty rusted, and I guess its an indication that the water has been there a while, so I'm guessing all of the leaked water from before just stayed there, but I'm not sure. Now, I'm riding on metal and haven't seen a drop, but I want to make sure no other place can leak before I put the new carpet in. I know about the leak tube for the air conditioner, but water comes out of it from the end of the tube outside the car so I'm assuming its OK. Another question is, what kind of material can I use to clean the rust up on metal that got messed up from the water or is there a good spray I can put down before I lay the carpet, and what are the general layers of carpet that I need to put in my car, i.e. insulation, sound padding, adhesive, etc. ect.

I would start with some sort of rust converter before I put anything down. Sand the rusted metal as much as you can then cleanup and apply some rust converter of some kind. This will seal the metal and prevent more rust from occurring.
If it was me, now you don't have to do this part, but, if it was me I'd spray some Black spray paint down first just to cover the rust converter. I know it stinks but, it would just be an extra barrier.
Then I would invest in some sort of vehicle insulation or for best results "Dynamat" Dynamat is expensive but, gives you the best quietness inside your vehicle. Helps keep noise out and inside noise in. Then lay your carpet on top of that.

Grind/sand the paint off of the rusted area, spray POR15 rust converter on the area, it will turn black. Make sure the area is good and dry - maybe let set overnight. Then I would get some Dupli-Color bed coating in the spray can and put a good coat, maybe two on and let it dry well, throw your carpet over it and you should be good to go.

POR15 will kill rust and the bedcoating will waterproof and sound deaden.

remove carpet dry the area well. sand good, use a rust protector then paint or put a bed spray on infected area. keep a eye on the floor for a few rainy days if no rain spray truck windows doors and under the hood by window and ac unit. if no leaks then reinstall carpet.

i had a leak and it took 4 months to find. it only leaked during hard driving rain. it was a small pin hole under the front window. it would run down the pass side post and thru the floor vent into the cab.

Hey whats up...
I have been told the same thing, to use the bedliner, but im wondering if it can be dangerous due to the heat from the transmission and cat converter... I also tossed this thick white padding (since it was soaked) under my jute padding, and Im not sure if that was my thermal sheild or what. It was only on the passenger side above the cat converter. Also, if I do use the bedliner, will it cause odors inside my truck?

Just bedliner the entire floor, chuck the carpet entirely, then no more stinky mildewy carpet.... maybe even put a drain plug in floor... that way you can just hose it out when it gets dirty!!!
