buying a 97-99 expedition, what are some of the problems i should look out for?

See if you can find one with an automatic fire suppression system already installed, or carry a fire extinguisher.

Watch out for the "Death Wobble". There is a problem with Ford Trucks will go into a violent front end shake when you hit a bump. I found an Article about a faulty stabililzer bar on the '97 and '98s Expys. My friend is having this problem now with his '97. He said he nearly crashed the other day because of it. Just FYI.

electrical problems, AWD problems Tranny problems. Buy a Tahoe instead.

Don't buy the Tahoe! I have the 99 and am completely satisfied with it for all these years. There have been some issues with the expedition, like any other vehicle though. With that said, my limited slip rear end, just starting slipping. This can be a common problem that is easily resolved by adding a fluid to the rear end. I am going to be trying this.
