Hi BMW Forum Members:
As you read this post of mine, you might say: "How cheap can one get?" (LOL), Well the lowest price I can find on BMW wheels I suppose, but I try to do this without reducing quality, because I have to watch my cash $$$ especially when shopping around for BMW parts & BMW accessories on today's market... ![]() I realize that the local bank, and I own a new 2004 530i, premium package, xenon's, Cd player and six disc Changer, and Automatic (but without the sport package), but I would like to have a set of M5 OEM type wheels at a good price that I can live with and afford, and try not pay BMW's high price of $4,500.00+ for the 18inch wheels mounted with 18inch tires! ![]() These past couple of weeks, I have been diligently researching the www, and I found some 17 inch M-5 wheels at $199.99 per wheel $799.96 four a set of four plus S&H, ![]() In purchasing the 17inch wheels this method will allow me to use my new stock BMW 17inch Contential Tires, (245 x 7.5 x 17) on them, in order to avoid the change over right now to the 18 inch wheels with tires, and then paying the local BMW dealer to reset the calibration on my speedometer. ![]() The wheels are not the 18inch or factory per say, but they are stock 17inch and look pretty good, CLICK: http://www.slickcar.com/productdetails.asp?ProductID=3084 Question: Has anyone here every dealt with this "Slick Car Wheel Company" before? If so what kind of experience did you have with them? Would you buy from them again? Detailed Product Information...BMW M5 17X8 OEM Wheel, SilverIn: Vehicle Styling\Wheels\Factory Reproduction\BMW Wheels #M5-17x8S By: Factory Reproductions MSRP: $400.00Just: $199.99 EachQuestion: How does the M5 replicas in the above hyperlink look to you fellow BMW owners, and what is your honest opinion of buying them over buying BMW factory M5 wheels? Thanks in advance. Presley348 ![]()

SUN: 10-17-04 & 11:45hrs Hi Jeff! I will check with bavauto.com also, but so far no one beats or comes to that price from Slick Wheels.com for a new BMW wheel OEM type for $199.99 + S&H, and it does makes one wonder how good they are, and how can sale them so cheap...???, anyway I will be waiting on what you find out before I make my final decision on what company to buy the 2004 BMW M5 wheels from. Thanks, R. Eddie Presley ![]()

Dear BMW Forum members:
Well, the email I sent to a well known company requesting some information and their thoughts on the M5 BMW copy wheels for $199.99 parade just got rained on today, : ( The name of my BMW source is a well known, trusted and high quality company for us BMW owners: "Bavarian AutoSport", (SEE BELOW), and when talking with another member here at the forum, he thought it might be good to post for others here to see where our eagerness might lead us sometimes without doing the proper www research on BMW items that we all want, before we buy, and I agree. I admit, I almost jumped too quick, and purchased these copy wheels, until Patrick contacted and answered my questions by email I sent him at Bavarian AutoSport! (SEE BELOW) Sincerely, a 2004 BMW 530i Owner, (Raymond Eddie) Presley348 ![]() ================================================== =============== Raymond, We only carry the OEM BMW M5 wheels. These guys are selling cheap aftermarket versions. We will not be carrying the aftermarket copies. Re: OEM type M-5 17inch wheels...$199.00
Thanks Eddie, [Raymond] for posting this info. In your e-mail to me you mentioned concern about the 'slickcar.com' wheels being a 'legal copy'. I'd be more concerned the quality and accuracy of the 'copy'. Too many of these 'aftermarket' 'cheap' wheels lack both and the only way to find out is to find someone you know [ facemail-like, etc.. ] who's bought them and are VERY happy, OR buy them yourself [$$$$] and hope for the best. "Consumer Reports" ? ?, probabily not but I wish they'd do some tests other than toasters and "Ionic Air Cleaners"......what's that Latin saying?.....I'll do some more research but don't expect to order them for Christmas time, or what ever winter holiday might apply. Stay in touch, I will to..........jeff b.

Hi Jeff: Look what Bav auto sent me! I like them but hate the price because I was getting spoiled to the $199.99 of the copies I was looking at), but ..... that's life I suppose, but I am for sure going with these wheels and the cheap copies! Anyway I have a question Jeff? I noticed these M5 wheels are different in size! One size is 9.5 width??? and is for the rear, and one size of 8" width??? and is for the front! Now I am from the old school and I never bought different size wheels for the car you drive daily on the surface streets unless ones rich with plenty of $$$ or a race car driver, (LOL), and I wonder how would I rotate these wheels on my Bimmer? (I was taught you are not supposed to change the direction of a radial belt, and to keep it going in the same rotating direction! Is this true, or has things changed over the last few years making it OK to change direction of a radial belt direction in tire rotation? ![]() I will be waiting to hear from you, before I buy the M5s. Re: OEM type M-5 17inch wheels...$199.00
I would recomend getting the same size width on all wheels, therefor after your done doing your bleach burnouts with the rear you can chage it over to the front and they will be the same size.
But to answer your question, you dont want to chage the directional of the tire so going from left to right wouldnt work, and you dont want a smaller tire in the rear with the wider tire in the front. So there realyl is no way to rotate them, therefore you would have to just buy a new tire. So like I said before just get the same size and it will same you money and the hastle of buying another tire. |

Re: OEM type M-5 17inch wheels...$199.00
Hi again Eddie, hope I can give you a sensible answer. I'll try step by step and hope it 'clicks' and I'm correct.
a] Wheel sizing; high performance cars have used different widths for many years, the reason is power output and converting that power to forward motion [traction]. There are many factors determining these choices, you can actually "over tire" a car [such a big 'footprint' the weight of the car doesn't allow full contact of the tires] by rediucing the tire load [psi] to a point you were better off with 'stock' sizing. In an effort to be 'simple' here, front width is more limited than rear because they need room to turn on axis, the rears don't. Other factors being 'equal', the larger rear tire print provides more rear traction and reduces 'oversteer' cornering [the tendancy for the back of the car to slide-out first. M series cars began using this with the E36 I think, as asymetrical tires became more popular and available. Our Z-3 has 7.5"J on the front, 8.5"J on the rear. b] tire rotation; with the advent of radial tires things changed as far as rotating goes. Wtihout going into all the technical reasons [I may not have] most performance tires today are asymetrical [should only rotate in one direction]. This is due to the tread design more than constuction reasons. In the case of M cars, Vettes, etc.. tire rotation is accomplished by i.e. demounting the R/R tire and mounting it in the L/R wheel and vs.vs. This can help even out wear inside to outside and is neccesary on cars with excessive Neg. Camber that's not adjustable, I have this done on our Z3 every 5K. Proper and ACCURATE Wheel Alignment is critical with these tires, more so than 'standard' width for obvious reasons and this will help to minimize wear. CORRECT tire pressure is JUST as important ! ! and the door sticker is a good starting point. c] $$$ vs. appearance vs. performance; Those are pretty wheels and the wider rears will look awesome [pardon my archaic colloquialism]. A quick analysis including the cost of good tires = $$$ = a minus appearance = a ++++++ performance = in most cases a wash on a 530i [the mid-sized optional sizes are more than adequate. d] Finally, if the bucks [and DON'T scirmp on tires!!!] are there, by all means go for the gusto! Yes those bavauto. wheels are $$$ but theres question on their quality and the 8" ones front and rear will be fine also make front ot rear rotation possilbe if desired. Then again, with the relatively minor difference in price..........boy, those 9.5" wheels........ Once again Eddie, I'll leave you in limbo and to your own designs and only hope the time you spent reading this was worth what it cost you. Best to you again and stay in touch.....................................jeff b. |

Hi Jeff: WHEW!!! Man you know your stuff on high performance BMWs! "Dearest Eddie", on a related note, I just ordered a power door lock kit and keyless entry system from the site with the "real cheap wheels" ! ! for my '80 320is. Looks like the same kit bavauto.com sells but for 1/3 the price.
