97 Z71, fluid levels

For a while now I have been thinking that I need to get a transmission flush as well as change the lube in the rearend. I have a 1997 Z71 with a vortec 350 and automatic trans. I plan to use royal purple products in both applications. What I need to know is how many quarts of trans fluid do I need? Also what is the fluid capacity on the rearend? I think I can change the rearend oil myself but if anyone has any pointers they are always welcome. Thanks a lot.

depends on how you drain tranny. A complete drain would include fluid in the torque converter. I this case you should get 14 quarts of trans fluid (and be wise and change filter as well). And for the rearend , 2.2 quarts (i'm assuming you have a K1500 w/ 10 bolt limited slip). I use nothing but Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil (stalube is crap in my opinion). It cost more than most brands, but it lasts longer and is not prone to heat break down like your petrolieum based gear lube. Oh and NO ADDITIVE GM has a TSB on this subject, but your glove box operators manual will tell you to use the additive, The GL-5 additive is just whale juice extract anyways (or it was at one time) I think we have laws now that say you can't slaughter the endagered whales just so your diifferential does not chatter. Lossen cover plate bolts bottom ones more than side and top, that way the fluid will drain into a small area instead of it shooting out the sides unless you have a drain pan with a 2 foot long catch opening
