98 windstar RPM issues
Anyone got any idea as to why all of a sudden our 98 windstar's RPM's become eradict (up and down) when you come to a stop? It just started doing this the other day, as the RPMs drop the engince of course begins to run rough acts like going to die, then the RPM jumps way above normal idle and then settles back to normal. On one occasion it did die and restarted without hesitation.
Just curious if anyone else noticed this issue. Thanks, AW

Re: 98 windstar RPM issues
I would suspect the idle air control (IAC) motor is sticking. They are cleanable, but usually the "fix" is more of a very short term one. Get a new one and replace it. They are EASY to replace, and not all that expensive.
There are other possible causes, but the IAC is by far, the most common cause. |

Computer is VERY unlikely the problem here.
IAC is a common failure item on th Windstar. IAC is held in place with 2 bolts......easy replacement.....can also try cleaning. Vacuum leaks are also common. Right next to the IAC....on top of the intake manifold is the elbow that goes to the PCV valve......I had a leak develop from a crack on the inside of the elbow. Worth checking around for vacuum leaks from other places as well while you are looking around in there. |
