1996+ Hatch ??? DOHC???

Ermm, I looked on google, but i dont think i looked for the right thing. So i have a question to ask. I currently have a 1990 240sx and gas upon other things are really killing me. If i sold everything id have some money to spend and i wanted to get something w/ good gas mileage, reliable, and easy to do stuff to.

So...first of all...is there a "special" name or model name for the 96-whenever that "big eyed" model was discontinued? Besides Civic hatchback? Second of all, was there a year model of these '96+ hatchbacks that came stock with the DOHC vtec? like the Si or something? Any info would help, i hear good things about the hatches with auto-xing. And this car would suit me well...It may be a while before i reply back, but i will be back. Thanks bunches...

Re: 1996+ Hatch ??? DOHC???

There are 2 different types from '96-'00. Both are the 6th generations of Civics, '96-'98 and '99-'00. They look slightly different from eachother, all cosmetic. The only hatchback models (also called 3dr, calling the rear hatch a door) were the DX and the CX. Both had the same motor, a 106hp SOHC motor. If you go to www.edmunds.com and look at the '96 and '99 models you will see some pics of how they both look.

Yeah, easy maybe. But the car $ plus the engine $. I dont think i can afford all that right now. And I will not drive a car with 106 HP. Theres no way. Ohh well, thanks for the help, I may be back soon.

The SI (99-00) did come with a DOHC V-tec engine, but it is not a hatch.

The civic type R has a dohc, but not available in US. If money is an issue, which it seems it is. Just buy a old hatch with a blown motor for $1500 at most, and put 3 or 4 grand into a 99-00 SI engine.

Not that you'd want to swap in a larger engine, if gas prices are concerning you with your current car... cause most b-series transmissions are not geared for fuel economy.

I have a 97 DX hatchback, and I'm currently getting around 35-37mpg on the stock engine and transmission (which is geared extremely tall).
That's with 17" wheels, and a heavy ass stereo system.

D16A6, you'd be running with the Si transmission, which is still geared too closely for good milage :P
Now with my 91 DX's (r.i.p.) transmission/engine, I was getting 40mpg regularly.

But the lack of good milage is what keeps me from swapping in a B16 or B18 myself.... thus, my gas saver D16Y7 and transmission are my ideal choice

D16A6, with auto tranny though. I swapped it out for a JDM D15B auto tranny and got little better gas mileage, but it was never more than 25-27 mpg
