How to Start the car from underneath?

ok I know if you touch two parts of the starter it cranks the engine, but where are those two part on our cars? I can make the starter motor spin but not engage, and I can make it spin the starter motor in place which almost stripped my flywheel because it wasnt moved up into place. I just did a auto to manual swap, and I havent bought the neutral safety switch yet, and don't know if that will work, and I need to start the car to see if the transmission works. Or which wires in the car need to be touched to start the car?

Your 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 is the 92nd out of the 315 that were made that year. Only 21 of which are exactly identical.

I didn't know you could touch a couple wires and get the car started.

If nobody has the answer, you could do the pop the clutch method. The compression in these cars is pretty high, you don't need to be going more then a few miles an hour (as opposed to the thirty mentioned before).

on my mother's toyota sienna, there was a relay for the alarm system/keyless entry, and i found that if i took a screwdriver (any long piece of metal) and touched two of the contacts on the relay, the car started right up! i think this was the relay for the kill-start mechanism (the only good things about alarms). so basically i bypassed that system, and started the car right up. you might take this and run with it, not sure what you could do if you don't have an alarm system. i wouldn't recommend touching random wires together, unless you wanna be replacing a lot of fuses.

Re: How to Start the car from underneath?

Wow, my mom has an 02 sienna and that'd be fun to try sometime. She is realy dumb about cars (dosnet know how to use her own radio and those things are sooo easy) she ramed my car once when she was in a hurry and my car was blocking her in.... so I disabled her car and stranded her in the middle of town! Where are the two contacts again?

lol, not an option the car is jacked up w/ no front tires...have to replace some ball joints and tie rod ends...as well as an axle...but I want to start the car so I can test the transmission to make sure i'm not doing all this work for nothing. And yes Yogs its possible but I couldn't figure out what to do on this starter and I didn't want to break anything...I did it on my Firebird and ended up bypassing the ignition switch and putting in a hidden push button starter switch. So no one knows??

Re: How to Start the car from underneath?

Yeah, it's possible to touch a couple wires and get the car started. We had an OLD Subaru and it usually wouldn't start when we turned the key so my dad would just touch two wires together and the car would start up. Eventually, he bought some button and did something to it that instead of touching the wires together, you just push the button and it'll start right up. Is that considered hot wiring?

Re: How to Start the car from underneath?

There should only be 2 wires going to the starter, power and "on". give the "on" wire 12 volts when the key is turned on and it shuld start. I could be completly wrong on this as I have no looked spacificaly at our starters.

if your mom's sienna has the keyless entry option, then the relay should be just underneath the steering column under the dash where all the wires run. there might be more than one down there, so be careful.

i just remember my mom having trouble starting her car, some electric wiring fault, and when i replaced the relay, it would start at all. but with the old relay, she could easily bypass the ignition and start it right there.

but yes, there should be a way to hotwire our cars by crossing 2 wires. your best bet would be to just ask a mechanic who is knowledgable about electrical systems. but i bet there's someone on 3SI who could answer this question.

Re: How to Start the car from underneath?

you have a thinish wire going to the solenoid which makes a click when it throws out the pinion onto the flywheel and you have a beefy wire from the battery to the starter motor which spins the motor. bridge these 2 with a jump lead or a well insulated screwdriver and the car will turn over with the ignition on obviously.once it has started take the bridged connection off straight away or your starter motor will be running the same speed as the engine and it will destroy the starter motor.beware not to touch the jump lead or screwdriver on the chassis or starter motor body or you will get sparks everywhere and it wont do your electrics any favours. really you shouldn't be trying this under the car anyway its not good or safe but if you have to thats how you do it.
