02 Expedition Gas Mileage

I have a 02 Expedition 4X4 with the 5.4 L V8. Needless to say my gas mileage stinks. I love this vehicle, but my gas mileage averages around 12-13 mpg. Any suggestions for improving my fuel economy??? Thanks for the help.

NOPE my 99 has that same sucking sound coming from the engine. Whether in the city or hiway it's the same. the best was about 16 all hiway though.

I'm thinking about getting a '04 or '05 4x4. Have you had any drivetrain issues...other that it's thirst for fuel?

@ 99K we had all the r/e ripped out and rebuilt. They wouldnt say exactly why but we just squeeked by under warranty. We were getting a funny sound. Come to find out the previous owner had some of it done too!!

I maintain a whole fleet of Expeditions, from '98 to '04 models. The early ones were bad, but the newer ones are terrible on gas.(they're Sheriff's patrol units) All have been to the dealer for numerous problems, parts are outrageously priced, waiting for parts is a crying shame.
We have 1 ton, four-wheel-drive, service trucks that get better gas mileage.

My 02 expedition had a silinoed in the tranny replaced at around 17k....The truck shifted realy hard and the o/d light flashed. It took about 3 days for the dealer to get the replacment part.

I`m seriously thinking about trading in my expo for something else. I love the truck, had no other problems but I`m affraid of future costs.

Nothing much you can do with the gas mileage. My '97 averages between 13-18 miles per gallon. I installed dual exhaust on mine and runs and sounds better but I think it made the gas mileage worst. If there is anyone out there with suggestions on how to better this, please post...thanks!

hi everyone we have 02 eb expedition 49k, i thought the gas mileage mostly highway was just as good as my ll wheel drive 1998 v8 mercury mountaineer w/172k miles

Try using mid grade gas. I have a 97 and when I statred using mid grade millage jumped 2 mpg. I am getting 18 MPG driving 60 on X-way, faster in big cities.
