Chinese Tailgate Cables!!

Can you believe it!! Received a notice to go and get my tailgate cables through the recall........ so I went to the Chevy dealer this morning to get them installed. Only took about 15 minutes. When I get home I thought, "Let's get a look at these new cables". There was a white sticker wrapped around the cable........ MADE IN CHINA. As if GM is proud of this fact. And yes, one cable had no weight on it with the tailgate down.
Some 4 million Silverados on recall I've been told...... that comes out to 8 million cables. Guess they got them cheaper and faster frim China.
I'm just curious...... where the originals made in China...... or Mexico?? And to everybody else who have gotten their new cables, are theirs made in China??

Re: Chinese Tailgate Cables!!

sounds like they may have installed the cables on the wrong side. Check to see if they are labeled "L" or "R" for left or right.

I'll bet if you sit on your tail gate that the loose one tightens up.

Re: Chinese Tailgate Cables!!

Mine is the same way. The pass side is loose and the driver side is holding the tailgate up. I have to put most of my weight on the pass side to get it to tighten up.

And yes, I swaped the cables from side to side and same thing. Pass side loose, driver side tight.

Re: Chinese Tailgate Cables!!

The originals were actually made in the USA, but remember guys, the cable supplier made only what GM specified IT wanted, it´s like you go to home depot to buy lumber, sure they have the pressure treated kind, but if your´re not willing to pay for it, they´ll sell you the cheaper kind. I bet the only way GM could fix theire mess was to buy the cable in china, ´cause I´ve worked with the chinese and one thing I have to hand to them is that they are FAST and Cheap!

Re: Chinese Tailgate Cables!!

So, if we don't want the el-cheapo Chinese cables - where can we get some that are safe and don't break the bank?

Is there an after-market cable available via AutoZone, NAPA, etc?

My passenger side cable is loose as well... does anyone know why one is tighter than the other? Does this mean the tailgate is weaker? So if I put weight on the passenger side, will it tighten up? With all the problems I've had with my Chevy, I'm really considering a FORD next time

Yes, cables are available through Autozone, O'Reilly's, NAPA and other suppliers. The cables through O'Reilly's are $14.99 each.

They are probably made in China also, who knows??

Re: Chinese Tailgate Cables!!

Holy crap they are making a killing off a couple pieces of metal riveted together and a little time in labor. This has to be one of the simplest mods you could do yourself with a couple pieces of flat stock and a good steel rivet.
