I am having my 1994 4.3 Blazer worked on and the mechanic tells me there is a short in the wiring to my oxygen sensor. He said it could cost over 750 dollars to fix it since the wiring goes around the transmission and he might have to pull it out to find the short. Is there a way to just run a new wire to the sensor. Any advice would help.
Thanks |

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
if there is a wiring problem in that harness you dont have to pull the tranny. unplug all the harness connectors and clips and remove the harness. sounds like they were trying to scam u. you can do it yourself but your going to need a detailed wiring diagram. quite honestly they might have b.s. about the o2 sensor wiring to begin with. is the o2 sensor a 1 wire or a 4 wire heated sensor? do you have a scantool that can read live data?

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
Wow, what a crooked mechanic.
Report him to the better business bureau. $750 for a O2 sensor replacement? Jesus, you can do it yourself for $5 once you find out what wire is shorted. |

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
No shit, that is why no one can trust mechanics anymore, they are all out to fuck you over.
This is why everyone is learning more online like here. |

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
Someone should start a web page for reporting scam mechanics, and list the few good ones.
I had to quit working for 1 shop several years ago when the boss asked me to really screw over some woman getting an out of province inspection. They wanted $800. to fix a perfectly good, and safe Jeep. I'm glad that they got shut down 4 years later |

Thanks for the input. I thought the same thing so I basically told him to get @#. I figure I can look for the short myself and I don't find one replace the sensor. I might replace the sensor anyway since the car has almost 100,000 miles.
Again, I appreciate your thoughts. odb... |

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
Some circles of thought are that the O2 sensor should be replaced every 80K to 100K miles. They do lose their efficiency.

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
I agree with you Busa 4 I can't do all my repairs now due to a very active past lifestyle, that leaves me in a lot of pain most of the time, So I found a great old school mechanic for 40.00 bux hour canadian. He only takes in the jobs that he wants, but he'll never rip you off. He'll tell you what's wrong with your car even if he won't take the job, so you shouldn't get ripped off.

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
An informed consumer is the best defense against fraud and unscrupulous service.
I find it disconcerting, the generalities used here against mechanics. Statements such as: "No shit, that is why no one can trust mechanics anymore, they are all out to fuck you over." Well, some of us here are mechanics who work everyday and see all kinds of problems. Some are retired. And these mechanics offer a wealth of knowledge and experience. However, we offer advice based upon those experiences in the thought of helping others out with out the expectations of any renumeration just the feeling of helping others with what we know. This is only my opinion. |

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
I do admit, I was wrong with that statement.
But with labor rates the way they are and climbing, no one will be able to afford to have anyone but themselves have their vehicle repaired past the warrenty. |

Re: Oxygen sensor wiring
As a retired GM Master Tech and ASE Master rating I have to say I have always gone out of my way to help anyone at any time. Hell I had to miss the Steeler football yesterday because a friend needed help.
As per the shop rate the Tech gets very little of that very high labor rate. And being flate rate you have to be very good and fast at what you do. And if you get any come backs we did NOT get paid to fix it a sec time. Guys used to kid me about taking home a shop manual and look it over on the weekends but it sure help out when you need to know something and did not have to waist the time to go and look it up. Fireplug When we would take the yearly GM rating tests we lived in the dam manuals looking for the answers to tests. So if you go to a dealership insist on a Master Tech because he will not just throw parts at the problem He will test things first and then know what the problem is before he installs new parts. |
