Japanese or US Engine
How do you tell if a 4th generation (90-93) accord has an American or Japanese engine??

That's not a good question. That's like saying How can you tell if A Mustang has an American or Japanese engine.
Honda is a Japanese car manufacturer that produces the Accord in Maysville Oh. All cars sold in the U.S. are for domestic use only. Now it is possible someone could have done a swap with an engine that's not available for sale in the States. The correct engine code for that model year is A16 or A20. It's a SOHC Non VTEC engine http://www.accordinglydone.com/data/...s.php?Series=A

Re: Japanese or US Engine
If I asked a stupid question then perhaps I am misunderstanidng what people are talking about....
In some of the other area they refer to JDM? or a US Engine? What are they then talking about? |

JDM..Japanese domestic Market US parts would be imported parts to Japan Japan parts would be imported parts to us Anything domestic is produced within the continental country Anything foreign, can still be produced within that country, but originated overseas (out of the country) Anything imported is made, produced, and manufacturered overseas and is distributed into the country through customs

Re: Japanese or US Engine
Actually I thought it was an intelligent question!
I happened to know that the whole of an Accord has been assembled in the USA for many years, but maybe not everyone knows that. And even if they did, it's not impossible that an engine could be from somewhere else. Darn it, the Cadillac Allante's bodies were made in Italy and flown here in a jet! |

Re: Japanese or US Engine
Well that is what I was thinking..Yes, I know most foreign cars are now made in the USA - that is what keeps the prices reseaonable....However many many parts come from around the world....and sometime it is luck of the draw. As in Nikon cameras some are made with USA parts where others are made with Japanese parts. YOu can tell by the serial number....
So again What the hell is the difference between JDM and US??? |

JDM---Japanese domestic market. Parts only availabe overseas but can be specially ordered and shipped. To them, their parts would be domestic. Just like our parts made within the states are domestic to us.
But once again to answer your original question, a 4thgeneration (90-93) Accord engine is a japanese engine assembled in the U.S. Honda corporation of America. Honda has been building cars in the U.S. since the late 70's Specifically in Maysville, Oh. http://www.hondaohio.com/index2.asp I agree, all parts are created in different plants across the world. But the final assembly of the A16 or A20 engine or any current honda engine is here in America http://www.hondaohio.com/manufacturi...ties/index.asp

Re: Japanese or US Engine
Here is my two cents. Whether an engine is a JDM or US has nothing to do where it was made but rather where it is intended to be used. A JDM engine meets Japanese domestic emission requirements and a US engine meets US emission requirements. And a California engine meets California requirements. If you find a JDM in the US it was originally built to be used in Japan but was probably removed from a junker in Japan and sent here for resale because it can not be resold in Japan. Does that make it clearer.

Re: Japanese or US Engine
Because the Japanese have very strict rules on the sale of engines. They feel it is a major part of the car and only minor parts can be sold, such as accessories. I think it is to promote the sale of new cars. I know their vehicle inspection program is one of the most strict in the far east.
