96 4.3 wont start after heavy rain

I am close to trading in for a ford. Just took it in to replace fuel spider assemby,plugs, wires, cap ,rotor ,egrmotor even the tires. It runs fine when its sunny and not raining but when it rains hard something is obviously getting wet. It tries to crank then backfires and usually messes up stater drive last time broke end housing on starter. engine coughs and acts like it runs backwards for split sec. Please help before i go ford or worse amc gremlin.
