Unhappy car shuddering

hey guys. i just came home not too long ago and noticed my car starts to shudder a lot. i first noticed the shuddering as i was braking for a stop light and noticed my rpm's went lower than normal (for mine its about 0.5 - 0.4 rpms) as i kept braking. after the car stopped, the rpms went normal. also when i was parking my car, when i placed it in park, the car started to shudder again and go under normal rpms. is this normal? what can i do to slove this problem (if it is one)?

Re: car shuddering

Hmm. Sounds like the idle isn't where it should be (and unlike old cars, you can't just wind the screw up a little!).

But 0.5 rpm - I don't think so!! I think you mean 500 rpm (think "0.5 rpm = one revolution of the engine every half MINUTE"!!)

Shuddering during braking (at speeds over about 20 mph) means the discs are off. Is that what's happening?

Please confirm that the check engine light is working, but not on when driving? We need more information here.

Re: car shuddering

yeah im so sorry bout the confusion. i just see the "1" on the rpm gauge and for some reason just said 0.5. please excuse the error.

about the braking, it is kind of difficult to describe but ill try my best. when im braking the car and as it is just about to stop, the car begins to shudder a little bit but then stops as the car comes to a complete stop. this also happens when i shift from park to drive, drive to reverse, etc. etc. like i said before i notice the rpms go from about 500 rpms to almost 300. not too sure if that is normal.

my check engine light im sure works but has not turned on at all ever since i got the car about a year and a half ago. i am about 140,000+ miles and have had my car serviced 3 months ago (full honda scheduled check-up).

could the shuddering have anything to do with my driving or timing belts? i know that i have to replace these son ( so says the people at honda). any other information?

I have the same prob, I warm up the car, hit my first stop light of the day, and the thing starts shuddering...dropping my rpm to below normal (700-750, I think) almost idling me out at times. The problem usually seems to go away after the car reaches operating temp. I'm not really sure what's causing the prob, but a friend of mine says it might have something to do with the IAC valve. Anyway, if u solve the prob...let me know how u corrected it.

Oh yeah, and aobut the idle screw, I"m not 100% sure, but doesn't the 5th gen HAVE an idle screw to adjust the idle??

Re: car shuddering

From what you say, it's not the brakes (and it's not the late oil change -- 200 miles is nothing).

I don't know about the idle screw, but my impression is that the idle is controlled by the ECU.

Your driving wouldn't cause this, and I doubt the balancer belt would have slipped (although others more knowlegeable than I am might set you straight on that).

I THINK the shudder is othe issue is why is that happening? Let's just make sure of one thing - you say you're sure the check engine light works - it should come on when you turn on the ignition (along with all the other warning lights).

Re: car shuddering

yeah the engine light does come on when i start the car. other than that...nothing. perhaps maybe its the transmission?

darchside - it doesnt only happen when the car hasnt reached opt temp. the shuddering happened last night after a 20 minute drive from school. im sure the car would have already been at opt temp by then.

Re: car shuddering

My 91 has been doing the same thing around 2500 RPM and it is after it has reached operating temp. I am going to try to reset the ECU and see if it helps. I'll keep you guys posted.
I'm pretty sure it isn't the fuel filter or pump cause I had them replaced as well as spark plugs, wires and rotor. I have a rebuilt F22 with 90K miles from Japan in it. Is there a difference in the US and JDM ECU?

Re: car shuddering

ok i took my car out for a spin this morning and drove like i did last night. this time there was no shuddering at all. either from braking or putting it in drive. perhaps its just the car acting up or something. perhaps ill try to put some lubeguard in the car and see if that helps any bit at all.

Re: car shuddering

No luck with the battery idea reseting the computer, it still shakes and boggs at 2.5k RPM's

Gonna look into other possible ideas.
