It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.
Does that answer the question?

From what I heard there are also plans to install the I14 (25,480 liters) version in the new and upcoming suv: the Hummer H0 aimed at the soccer moms of tomorow on improved and increased power trips.

I've been around a few of the smaller siblings of those engines, and the most amazing thing about them is how quiet they are. You might imagine something like that would be really loud, but there is relatively little noise and vibration considering how much power they make. The scale is just rediculous too, the pictures don't really do it justice.
