loseing boost need help

Ok, i just installed my BOV and boost control... when i did i came accross a problem... say when im boosting it does great until aboput 17lbs and its starts to run rich and pop... my first reaction was i need to get a SAFC... so i did... got it installed and tried to adjust the settings... but still i was geting the same thing... then after reading to afc and turbo timer... its telling me that i have all the air but im not buring it... so then i decided it was a leak in the intercooling line... i checked the complete system down to every coupling... no leak. last night i just relized that when i start my car it puffs a little smoke out... valve guide seals are going out... but im not sure if that would affect that... mabey lost compression it cause it to do that?... need responses.

Re: loseing boost need help

Wait many thoughts come to mind...first off, you are running 17lbs of boost...?
1.Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge?
2. What injectors and fuel pump do you have?
3. How long were you running it without the AFC...when you mod...do it safely, get everything you need before turning up the boost or you are going to destroy your pistons.

Next thought...when you say you checked every coupling and hose...how did you check...did you do use a intake pressure tester...or did you simply tighten all the hose clamps...because tightening the hose clamps wont help you find a boost leak...

Lastly, what color is the smoke and does it only happen when you start your car...this can be normal due to the cold temperatures we are starting to get(at least up hear in NY), so don't jump to conclusions...how many miles you got on your car?

It’s hard to explain the difference that even a mildly fierce turbo will make on your car! The stock turbos are very tiny and after 4500rpms can not hold boost past about 10psi.

this is probably the most of your problems right there.

i also had a popping hesitation for a long time. you have to learn to adjust your boost so that it goes up to 15psi-or 14psi and drops back down to 10psi.

it seems this problem is more intact with the 1st gens

first thing that comes to mind is spark blow out, unless your injectors aren't big enough, then fuel cut, but yea, answer the questions that those guys posted and that will help out a lot on giving a diagnosis

Re: loseing boost need help

oh and yes ive noticed the fuel cut kicks in around 15lbs... but im also running stock boost... i think my BOV is causeing higher boost...

oh and i checked all my couplers with that leak stuff you spray on and it makes it start to foam like crazy... (weve used it on my bros eclipse so it works)

Re: loseing boost need help

Ok, first off, the BOV should only make you run rich right after shifts and right after you let off the throttle after hard acceleration...but I don't even know how you could be running rich at 17psi on stock injectors...those 360cc are already running far past their capabilities...

Also describe your 'pop'.
Spark blowout is when you are accelerating and then you slow a bit, then you accelerate, then you slow down a bit again, like repeating hesitation.

Fuel cut is downright VIOLENT. When you get fuel cut...you'll know...your car will shudder, shut down, jerk about, and you will end up on the side of the road.

Which is happening? You could even be getting knock from running too lean.

Also, you really should pressure test your intake...that spray stuff works in locating leaks in your tubing...but you can have plenty of leaks that aren't in your tubing...you could have a crack in your plenum, you could have a vacuum hose that has blown off somewhere...pressure test it...because a leak would explain you running to 17psi...also, check the vacuum tube running to your boost gauge...if it is pinched, it can show higher boost readings. Mine was pinched and it was showing 14 psi, when I was only at 12.

You say you were running rich...how do you know? Is this an assumption? I would hazard a guess that you are running extremely lean.

lastly, you said your boosting at stock levels also what turbos are you running stock boost with? ...what is your boost controller set at...12? And you're hitting 17 at WOT? Am I understanding this correctly?

My first few ideas...
1) check the gap on your plugs and regap as needed, as you are probably getting spark blowout
2) pressure test your intake as you might have a leak
3) GET LARGER INJECTORS...you have turbos, fuel pump, and fuel controller, but you are starving your engine of fuel...the 360cc injectors cannot hang with those other upgrades...your playing dangerously with your engine...you had turbos and a fuel pump, but stock injectors and no fuel controller to compensate for all the extra air that was being brought in by the turbos...you are running the risk of destroying your pistons...so mod carefully.

i know im runig rich because of my turbo timer...

when it gets to say 15 psi it starts to studder a little bit... and if i give it to much throttle it studders bad and sometimes pop sorta like a backfire... mabey is a back fire... i have got all the sujections from MVP Motor Sports (Dusty the guys who owns it is my freind) and Power House Raceing.

1. Leak in Intercooling pipeing
2. Spark plugs
3. Plug wires

and i asked Power House about the stock turbos makeing my car studder liek that because it cant hold pressure and thhey said that wouldnt cause my car to studder...

I'm running off stock turbos ( i need to remove the turbo upgrade thing from my signitur list because i was ordering a upgrade but backed out...)
and even if my gauge was penched it still souldnt studder... and im pretty sure it isnt pench because its a electronic guade...
