Unhappy sounds like popping corn

hey everyone, got kind of a ploblem...or two. i just bought an 85 mk1 that has already had some attention put into it:

hks turbo,msd ignition+coil,stand alone engine management system,blitz bc,flowmaster exaust,apexi tubo timer etc.

The thing is that i noticed that when im not giving it gas it sounds like im popping some pop-corn out of the exaust, i was wondering if it could be the plugs and wires or if it is something else.

any help would help me greatly! oh and im not sure if this has to do with this problem but its still a problem but im not hitting my high boost wondering if its the tuning

Re: sounds like popping corn

it might be supercharged if it is a 4ag engine swap, but the 1985 mr2 only came n/a. NO first gen cars came with a stock turbo, and very few have been modified to have a turbo.

Re: sounds like popping corn

yeah, could be an aftermarket hks kit maybe? at a guess because the engine isn't meant to be turbo'd theres cam overlap to help the engine scouring (breath) but with a turbo it will cause blow through. could also have something to do with fuel map, if your not getting the air in off the gas then it'd spit raw fuel into the exhaust, when it hit some air it'd explode. ever seen a WRC car off the throttle? what sort of "stand along engine management system" do you have Brian?

if it was ignition youd notice it run rough and the air would pass too meaning it would ignite before the turbine, i'd say one way or another youve got excess fuel off boost.

Re: sounds like popping corn

well, ok, first id like to thank you guys for your help; thank you guys. to answer ac427cpe(dan?), my engine is not supercharged and definitely turbo because i hear the wine and blow off... come to think of it i have a boost gauge on the far left of my dash, looks stock to me but not sure.

to trd2000 my engine management system is a Simple Digital System programable engine management em3 (its a mustard yellow gold).
i do think the engine is running a little rich because im smoking through the exaust, white smoke, probably oil right?

Re: sounds like popping corn

oh, almost forgot, can anyone tell me about the turbo and why im not hitting the high boost or does it have something to do with the fuel map or the engine management system?

is it hard to tune the e.m.s. or do you need to dyno tune it?

any input helps me...trust me

I'm still really confused... how could this be a 4ag or a 4agze? Does this guy have a 3sgte, or something off the wall like a turboed silvertop?

Give us an engine bay pic.

Re: sounds like popping corn

I'f your burning oil then you have much more to worry about than a popcorn noise.
Now that noise isn't a back fire noise is it?
Maybe you should just check out the basics.
If you got access to a timing light you just might wanna check ur timing.

Re: sounds like popping corn

hey Draz, sounds like hes got something off the wall, prob 4age with a turbo kit, the boost gauge makes me wonder if the dash is from a supercharged aw11?

metalowl it sounds like you have a VERY unique engine and vehicle setup, you should really get hold of whoever you baught it off and ask their advice cause hopefully they know whats been done to the car or where they got it tuned. aside from that im with blitzkeg, check the timing, check everything, plugs, leads distributor, all the basics, if they are all ok you have to move onto bigger things, like checking the em3 and its map.

as for the turbo not making boost that could really be anything in this instance, it's not a factory turbo, maybe if you sort the rest the turbo will come right... hate to be the one to say this but worst case you need a new turbo or a rebuild, the smoke may mean the turbo has blown, less boost means less air and possibly thats how the fuel is getting to the exhaust for the popcorn noise, should probably get that checked out.

Re: sounds like popping corn

ok well heres the problem, i bought the car from a guy who bought it like this and i know who he bought it from but that guy moved so there goes my first hand advice...man i wish i could get in touch with him now, i didn't know my setup was that unique.
to dratz, i got no pictures right now and i am not really educated in putting pics on this forum anyway, sorry. maybe soon ill get my friend to help with that.

About the basics with the plugs and all, ive been looking but every one does gets confused about the application (im one of 3 mr2mk1s where i live, the others are bone stock). what should i get? maybe i can ask for it by name.

to trd2000: if my turbo is blown would i be able to hit 6psi on low boost? because its only the high that doesnt boost.

blitzkeg: its not a backfire just when i release the gas...palub lub bub pubbub buh buh buh

Re: sounds like popping corn

ok, what it sounds like is you bought a car that was set up to be tuned to a very high state.

pictures: if you can get pictures of it onto your computer, go to www.photobucket.com register, upload, and copy and past the [img] URL.

it sounds like you need to take it to a shop. without seeing what it is, we can't help you figure out what the problem.
