Replacing CPS

Any tips or a website on how to replace the CPS? Most of my other cars have been Fords with 302s so I am not too familiar with the 3500 engine. I went to Autzone to get the codes pulled(was bummed to find out a paper clip doesn't work like it does on the Mustang) and they told me it was the Crank Position Sensor. This makes sense as the car just died a couple of times and is hard starting.

I searched this forum but didn't see anything as a How To.

Hope this information helps.

1. Disconnect the neg battery terminal.
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
3. Remove the starter motor.
3.1. remove the front radiator lower air deflector. The bolts should go through the deflector vertically
3.2. remove the S-terminal nut and disconnect the solenoid wire. Remove the starter solenoid "BAT" terminal nut (the large one) and disconnect the battery positive cable from the starter motor.
3.3. remove the torque converter cover, retained by small screws.
3.4. remove the starter motor mounting bolts. Use care, the starter is heavy. Do not let it fall. Take note of any metal shims between the starter and the block.
4. detatch the CPS electrical connector
5. remove the sensor retainer bolt and separate the sensor from the block. Remove by pulling on the sensor connector. Do not pry on the bracket. Do not twist the seneor or damage the mounting bracket, if it is to be reused.
6. Installation is in reverse of the removal process. Torque the retaining screw to 80 in-lbs. Torque the starter mounting bolts to 37 ft-lbs. Torque the torque converter cover to 89 in-lbs. Torque the BAT nut to 84 in-lbs. Torque the S-terminal nut to 20 in-lbs. Torque the lower air deflector to 15 ft-lbs.

I never performed this procedure, so I hope my instructions are adequate.

Thank you for the reply. I ended up replacing it before I saw this post. It is the thought that counts though!!

I only removed the starter and was able to reach everything without disconnecting anything else. I even left the wires connected(as far as I remember). I did un-hook the battery, of course.

The shop manual says that you need to run a calibration routine when you replace the CPS. Unfortunately you need the GM computer in order to do this. Evryeone I know of on this board who has replaced the CPS has not run the calibration routine and the car has worked fine.

CPS seems to be a common problem on this engine.
