SR vs KA vs CA

for the last 30 minutes ive searched the threads trying to help me decide which engine swap is the right one for me, but im confused as fuck and it seems alot of posters arent giving the correct information

i was thinkin about making a comparisson chart for these engines
this is for a 89-93 240sx 5spd fastback

AVERAGE COST INCLUDING INSTALL
HORSEPOWER AFTER INSTALL
WEIGHT
ABILITY TO FIND AFTERMARKET PARTS
PROS
CONS

i want my 240sx to put out around 250-300 HP, this is for a daily driver not racing....i already decided i dont want the RB20, i was leaning towards SR but then i heard about the KA and CA18 and how they have some advantages

someone should make a sticky thread with alll the engines being compared

Re: SR vs KA vs CA

ALSO, if i was to get a 91+ with a ka24de, would it just be better to add bolt ons instead of a new engine?? i just want it to make 250-300 HP, no racing, no drifting, just a nice fast open road driver

KA more torgue better for drag racing if you turbo the KA24DE, after market is growing rapidly, weight not too big an issue, the major con is miles but just rebuild, pros american easy to find parts, IRON block

SR more power stock slightly lighter, great aftermarket support , the parts are much easier to find in US now cuz online dealers, 200ish hp stock depending on the model you get, personally the S15 one is to much hassle to deal with, square motor better for drifting supposedly

CA light, decent power, parts not to hard to find, aftermarket is going to be mostly imported from japan, getting older, dont make them anymore i dont believe

then there is always the difference in size, each one has different good points, i mean power wise in the end the price gets pretty similiar, rebuild vs swap, if you do go with the swap i would suggest the SR, and if you rebuild a KA i would get new internals while you were having it worked on, there are abunch of sites you can find thru google on this

well for open road you should just go with the KA i mean its easier to make maintain etc.

rebuild , get forged internals if you have the money depending on where you go it'll be roughly the same as the swap and thats with a turbo unless you can get yourself a cheap SR/CA

it'll come to personally preferrence alot

why are you going to have that much poewr and not race.....??

Re: SR vs KA vs CA

i live in california too, so dont forget the smog legal bullshit, cus the sr20 isnt smog legal but that isnt that much of an issue right now

the ka24det only comes in 91+ models right??

i got 2 options, buy an older 89-90 fastback and do the srswap, or buy a nice low mile 91+ nissan and add bolt ons

if i get a stock ka24det with like 100k miles on it, what kind of upgrades should i do to it to reach the 200hp club

help a nigga out

first off there is no true KA24DET only KA motors that people equip with turbos
the 89 to 90 KA motors are a single over head cam and you dont want that engine it would cost much more to get the power you want out of

the turbo kits that are readily available for the KA 240sx are for the newer models that are equiped with OBD2, there are also a few for the older ones

also if you live in cali then you should really just use a rebuilt KA because the SR or CA motors would not pass a visual inspection even if you could get it to pass emissions testing,

just search around you can find the turbo kits

forged internals, rebuild, intake system upgrade, turbo kit, FMIC, exhuast, highflow cat, LSDwould be nice, clutch

would you prefer all-motor buildup or turbo? i think ka24de is a good starting point for all motor if thats what you want, good for turbo too but not the cheapest.

Re: SR vs KA vs CA

having a turbo on your stock ka will also fail you unless you have carb exempt. They do make ka24e turbo kits but I am not sure if they are legal yet. I know greddy has some turbo kits that is in the process of being carb exempt. Either way you choose, you have to deal with the smog "bullshit"

Re: SR vs KA vs CA

if you go all motor you can make more than 300hp on the KA and you dont have to bother with turbo maintanace.

hahah you guys are too funny. a 300hp all motor KA?

and please explain to me what kind of mods you need to do to get that kind of power? and also do you honestly think its goin to be as reliable? and also please name a few people who has these magical KA engines.

now back to reality. i turboed my KA since 76K miles. i drive it 350miles a week for over a year, its been thru 2 summers, and now i have over 105K miles on it. not a single problem with the engine. so its 30K miles of around a real 300hp engine and not a hicup. getting 300hp is nothing for a turbo KA. if thats all yoru looking then get a turbo kit. you can easily hit that powr by running only 9 psi.

on nissaninfiniticlub forums they have guys making over 250whp-280whp on 9 psi. thats freaking over 300 crank hp.

a turbo kit also cost around the same as a swap but finding maintainese parts for it will be a breeze, along with random stuff you need here and there.
