Engine Failures

We purchased our TB LTZ new in Nov of '91 and 4500 miles and 6 mos later the engine destroyed itself 170 miles away on I-5 with my wife driving in the midst of a rain storm. The upshot was a new engine.

Well last Sat again on I-5 at least fairly close to home it once again ceases to run, and exhibits the same symptoms. Won't turn over, every warning light comes on and generally exhibits the same behavior as last time. Oh yes wife driving, again. Now awaiting to hear from the dealer what the problem is. The suspicion is another engine. (My suspicion not theirs)

I buy my wife new cars so I don't have to worry about it while she's out. This thing has proven to be unreliable to say the least.

Anybody else have a similar experience?

Believe this is a common failure on the early Trailblazers with the cylinder sleeves cracking and locking up the engine. Many owner's were given an extended warranty at no charge from GM because of this. Hope your dealer comes to your aid, today it seems most won't do anything except rob you blind.

With all due respect, if you purchased your Blazer in '91 you have managed 13 years of service, and you don't mention any other major problems. Sounds pretty good to me depending on your mileage of course... I would have driven in excess of 275,000 miles in that period not including work related travel.

If your year is off, then, GM did extend warranty coverage for the liners to 7yr/100k mi. on 2002+ GM's using the new for that year 4.2L I-6 (not the 4.3 V-6 from before).

Oops got lost in a time warp it was Nov 2001. No one has said anything about an extended warrantee. How would I go about find out about it?

Turns out this problem was the fuel pump. Wonder what's next?

Water pump and computer controlled belt drive fan clutch. Lay away 700 dollars or so.

The extended warr. only covers cylinder linings...I already tried that angle on another repair.

And as far as the Fan Clutch goes. I had to pay up front for the repair, but a complaint into Chevy Customer Assistance had me reimbursed within a month. Apparently they know about it failing, and if you give them a call and send in some documentation about the repair at a dealer, they will reimburse you--or at least they did me. Hope this helps.
