I changed my timing belt over the weekend and had every intention of changing the waterpump at the same time, as is usually recommended. However, after getting the bolts out, I could not get the large hose coming from the radiator off, to save my life. I tried from above, I tried from below and it would not budge (working space is pretty cramped, obviously). I managed to get the clamp to move, but it's like the hose is superglued to the pipe. (Now I can't get the clamp back onto the hose -- can't get enough leverage -- but that's another story). It also didn't look like there was enough room to pull out the pump, even if I had been able to remove the hose, even though I had removed the motor mount.
After four hours (!!) of trying (with a few breaks for cursing and fuming), I finally gave up, rebolted the waterpump in place and settled for just replacing the tensioner (came with the new waterpump), installing the new belt and putting everything back together. Now, if my waterpump eventually fails and I have to do it all again, does anybody have any suggestions on what I should do differently? Thanks. |

Re: 93 Escort 1.9L How remove waterpump?
Yeah it's a spring clamp. Hmm, I forgot about the screw type. That would be a hell of a lot easier. The radiator hose looks like it would be a real bear to feed through up to that point. Thanks for the advice, though. It's dumb, but the hose looked to be in such good shape that it didn't occur to me to cut it off. D'oh.

Re: 93 Escort 1.9L How remove waterpump?
put a little baby oil or similar type lubricant on the inside of the new hose then when ya' finaly get it wormed around where it needs to be, it will slide right onto the water pump with no trouble....'cuz there's really no place to get a good solid grip on it to slide it on...yup.....spring clamps suck...
