starting problems

This may be an easy one, but I'm trying to figure out exactly where the problem is.

I have a 1999 Wrangler that won't start on it's own, even though it has at least some battery charge (it may have gotten drained over the weekend). It starts up with a jump, & stays on as long as I keep the engine revved. However, as soon as I ease off the gas, it dies immediately & won't restart again without a jump.

Could it be the battery, the alternator, both, belts? My thought is the alternator should keep it going after the jump, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The battery did have some corrosion, so I don't know if it's good anymore. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: starting problems

Battery and cables would be the first place I'd look; especially since the battery is corroded and needs to be jumped - !

Re: starting problems

i would replace battery, if that doesnt work, then alternator, and if that still doesnt work then consider some overdrive pulleys, they mite get the alternator to turn faster

Re: starting problems

No offense, but if it's not charging with the standard pulleys there's another problem that needs to be tracked down.

Stret, did the new battery and/or alternator fix the problem?

Sorry about the delay in posting, I've been out of town.

The new battery did help, as it was completely dead & wouldn't hold a charge. I did find out something interesting on the way, though I haven't verified whether it's really true or not.

What I found is that the alternator is at least somewhat controlled by a computer chip, or something to that effect. This computer component is powered continuously by the battery. Since the battery wouldn't hold a charge, & this chip was powered only by the battery, & not from any alternator power, the car would die immediately after the jump because the chip didn't have any power. So it seems that both a good battery and the alternator are required to keep the engine running.

Again, I haven't verified this, but it matches with the behavior I saw. Thanks for all the responses!
