Here's the senario...
I have an Alpine headunit which I was selling to my friend. This unit is about 3 months old. It worked just fine today. My friend came over and we removed it from my car and wired it up to his E36 BMW. Have it all in.. looks nice... he's happy... i'm happy. I preset the radio stations for him etc.. He's about to drive off, pops in a CD and NO SOUND!!!!! What the hell?!?!? -The radio works fine. All speakers are working when the radio is on. -When you switch to CD, the CD starts playing. It's spinning, counting the time up... you can FF, skip through the tracks..... BUT NO SOUND!!!! ...what on earth?!?!?! We both know that it was working earlier today in my car. We didnt bang or drop it. The CD reader appears to be working perfect, just no audio in CD mode!!! AHHH!!!!

Its gotta be a problem with the installation. Probably a simple wiring problem, can't tell w/o looking at it.
My advice, take it to a stereo shop and let them take a look at it. I doubt they will charge you to inspect it. anyways, GOOD LUCK with it. I know how it feels when you try to sell something to someone and it has always worked and worked the night before you were to sell it but failed when you were about to sell it.

You might have to have someone look at the receivers internals to see if everything is lined up properly for the CD player as well as nothing fried in there during installation.

I dont think its a wiring problem... wiring consists of power and speaker wires basically.
The speakers do work in radio mode. You'd think the CD reader is f'd up but its working fine just NO SOUND!!. Again, we didnt drop it or anything... also tried numerous CD's. This really sucks!

I would try contacting Alpines customer support at 1-(800) 421-2284 and if nothing comes from that I would get an RMA if possible.

OK... I figured it out. It was a wiring problem, but it wasnt my fault.... The adapter harness had a wire mislabeled.
There was a wire on it that said power antenna. Today I was thinking... hmm.. E36's dont even have an external antenna. So I called him over and pulled the radio. I snipped the "power antenna" wire. Started it up and now there was no sound on radio or CD.... AHHH!!! The "power antenna" was really a power wire for a factory amp!! When the "radio" was on, the amp was powered, but when you switch to CD the amp was getting turned off. ![]() I attached the remote turn on wire to it and problem solved!!
