Hi, wonder if anyone can help. My 96 SL2 came to a complete standstill the other day...the engine turned over but wouldnt engage. I eventually got it going and took it for a diagnostics. The code I got was P1406. I cant find that code in the Hayes book....does anyone know what it is. A friend of mine thinks it has something to do with the air intake system and that one of the sensors has gone. I cant afford to take it to a dealers as I am a single parent and struggling already!!!! Help on this would be appreciated.

I think that, from reading other posts here, my problem is the EGR valve. My car was running and I pulled up at lights, it stalled and would not start...tried for 10 mins. Got it going but the car kept loosing power and jerking. When I stopped it felt like the car was going to stall again. Its ok at the moment but I know it will do it again....hopefully when I dont have my son in the car and am not on a freeway. Any opinions on my theory?

Re: What Does This Code Mean?
i think that code has to do with the EGR, but i am not sure. go ahead and take it off, clean it and the passiges in the head with sensor-safe carb and choke cleaner, and replace the gasket($5)

Code P1406
I just bought my own Actron Scanner and have a 96 Saturn SC1 with the same code, P1406. It shows it as "EGR Pintle Position Circuit" using the included CD software. I would assume that replacing the EGR valve would be in order but not sure. Anyone else have any ideas? TP

Re: What Does This Code Mean?
I would try cleaning it as sierrap615 recommends. Easy, cheap, and it was effective for mine.
