Question Exhaust

I just bought a 1996 blazer 2 door LS and I want to put exhaust on it. The thing is I want it to sound mean and tough, but I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm only a senior in high school and still saving for college, any ideas? I was thinking that a glass pack would sound good but wasn't sure.????

Re: Exhaust

Glasspack if your going for a mean sound and little money, got to go glasspack! I got mine for about $47.00, installed at the muffler shop. Sounds good, sounds mean!

Re: Exhaust

Yes, that is the cheapest way.

Don't change the piping, just slap in the glasspack.

Only thing is they don't last too long.

Re: Exhaust

Too true. The glass flossing they use to fill them with gets soaked with water that is present as a byproduct of normal engine combustion. The wadding will shift or rot, usually leaving strands of "nose hair" hanging out of your pipe before long.

I strongly suggest a well tuned and fitted aftermarket cat-back exhaust. A single baffle will do nicely in our trucks since they have only a single catalyst. Seek one that features seam welded construction, rather than a press-fit and spot weld construction. *cough-cough-Flowmaster*cough*cough*

Gibson, at the extreme high end - featuring stainless construction that will last longer than your truck - FloPro at the other end. Inexpensive, but aluminized with the seam welded construction. Damn near bulletproof from very heavy gague construction. Mine along with all new 2.25 single pipe with a "beauty tip" welded on was a mere $150 installed with lifetime warranty. Sounds mean, lasts long, will not make the state troopers chase you when you pass a semi on the highway.

So where can I get a set-up like this. It sounds like a good product, and good for the money. Will this also increase the horse power. Let me know and thanks for the help

Re: Exhaust

Any muffler shop should be able to order them for you. If you want to check them out for yourself, browse here:

http://www.flopro.com/FloPro.htm

I suggest a center/offset arrangement. The offset will face your catalyst, the center pipe will join up with your existing factory pipe, or a new 2.25" pipe. Resist temptation!! It is easy to want to get dual exhaust. If your tire lives under the truck (as it does in mine) it will not be possible. Also, duals tend to take away needed heat to allow the exhaust to burn off water it will collect. With that said, also get a look here if you have the bankroll:

http://www.gibsonperformance.com/

In my case, after installation - the vehicle runs quite a number of miles farther between fill-ups, and it is a lot peppier on the take-off. Low end power is greatly enhanced and smooth in delivery. What we like to have when hole-shooting and trolling about in the mud and slop. Though, be careful in winter on slick roads...

After you get this pipework done - think about modding your intake too. With open, less restrictive exhaust - you can then experiment with cold/ram air induction or just plain cutting up your factory airbox and adding a K&N Filtercharger.

Re: Exhaust

You don't need a cat back for a good sounding and cheap exhaust syste.

Stick with the stock tubing and just insert a good aftermarket Flowmaster 40 or a Ravin Z55 like I have on mine.

This is what mine sounds like.

Re: Exhaust

Mmmm, very nice - and true! You can keep the stock exhaust and pop in the Ravin or the Flowmaster. Good clip dude! I chose the aftermarket piping to ditch the "wrinkly" pipework for smooth, mandrel bent tubing. Insignificant power increase, but I was after every last bit I could get and ditch the ugly, nasty brown and sandpaper fuzzy colored junk that was rattling around under it's belly.

Re: Exhaust

What is the stock size of the pipes going into and out of the stock muffler?

Also, are there performance differences between glasspacks and regular performance mufflers? (I've read that mufflers last longer)

Re: Exhaust

2.25"

Regular performance mufflers with straight through design are made for better flow and therefore better performance.

Re: Exhaust

BlazerLT what all have you done performance-wise to your blazer? I've gathered you have cold air intake and a muffler. Anyhting else?

What have you heard of the magnaflow mufflers?

I have installed a K&N FIPK Gen2 Cold Air Intake and a Ravin Z55 Muffler and other than that I have only installed Rapidfire plugs.

The CPI motor is really restricted when performance modding seeing it never really developed an aftermarket parts market.

Yes, I have heard about magnaflow and they are pretty good.

I recommend the Ravin Series because I have heard most of the mufflers and they are a little raspy when compared to the low growl of the Z55 or the Z33.

Do they make one for your exact year? Performance wise, you won't see any difference between a free flowing muffler and a full catback. Install the muffler and save the rest of the money and get a nice cold air intake to compliment that smooth flowing exhaust system.
