Ingnition problems?

Hey guys i may have an ignition problem with 95 ck 1500 4x4. When you turn the key it just clicks and nothing happens. You have to turn the key several times for it to actually catch the starter. Can i replace the ignition without any prob myself or would a shop be necessary. Thanks for any reccommendations guys.

Check the connection between the two positive battery cables. Clean the two cable connectors, and the lead spacer between them. Hope this helps.

Re: Ingnition problems?

Hmmm, I believe that this is a gas engine which will have only one battery and only one terminal on the positive. The diesels have two to jumper to the other battery.

It sounds as if the solenoid is going bad. Check that with a test light at the small solenoid wire at the starter. You will have to have someone hit the key while you have the test light touching. If it lights but the starter doesn't turn, you need a new starter. If it doesn't, then check the ignition switch.

On a 95 gas engine c1500 there are two positive cables stacked, with a lead spacer between them. One positive cable goes to the starter only, and the other to the under hood fuse and relay box. If the cable connection corrodes on the outer cable, the solenoid will click because its power is routed through the cable going to the fuse box, but the starter won't turn because no power is going to the main starter terminal.

Re: Ingnition problems?

Just worked on one today and it is not what you described, replaced the alternator and there was only one wire on the positive. However, it doesn't mean your wrong. perhaps I am. I have seen what you described numerous times on diesels, from the 80's to the 00's.

I don't know, maybe its the productiion run, but I have a 95, as well as my dad, and brother. All of them have the 5.7 Liter V8, one battery, two positive cables, and one negetive cable.

if the starter itself is clicking you may just be able to fix the solenoid. the copper bolt that the positive batter cable connects to on the starter is what the slug inside the solenoid strikes against when you turn the key. over time the bolt wears down and get a carbon build up causing a bad contact. you can pull the solenoid apart and rotate the copper bolt 180* and sometimes it will work like new. it's worth a try before buying a new starter
