Sell it no reason to start on the car now chaging trannys and engines and upgrades to much loot - with the money you'll spend to make it fast SRT's will be smoking you. I say you just sell it and dump that loot down on an SRT. That way you'll have a nice new car thats stick , and you wont need to do any performance upgrades it will be fast enough.

As for a swap you can swap in an SRT motor $$$
or just go with an RT motor.

just letting you know that there is a new SRT-4 comming so dont buy the regular one. This new one is a light weight SRT-4. Half of it is carbonfiber!

Re: im new to neons need help

you should swap in a 1995-1999 dodge stratus motor. 2.4l and 160hp. great power to weight ratio. alittle more mods and you will blow away srt's. no probllem. i got a 96 sohc and are planning to get the swap done soon. only cost about $2,000 or so. write me back for more info.

Re: im new to neons need help

Everyone keeps telling newbz to "Do a 2.4 swap."

It's not easy. Not impossible, but if someone doesn't know whether or not to swap a DOHC or sell their auto instead of swapping to a 5spd I'd say they prob won't want to do a 2.4 swap.

Anyway, you can swap to a manual transmission if you want to pull the engine out. After you get the engine out it's not that big a deal to swap - run some cables, install a pedal, you're done. Most swap kits can be had for $150 plus the cost of the transmission. If you don't want to do all the work of swapping everything out, then I'd sell what you have and buy a MTX to start with.

As for swapping to DOHC, it's not really worth it for the HP you'll be gaining. SOHC responds well to mods in the early stages, DOHC better when you get really modified.

If you do decide to swap heads, what you'll need is:

A DOHC head (95-99)
Top end gasket kit
Timing Belt
Timing belt Cover
Hood (DOHC has a bulge to make room for the DOHC timing belt cover)
Head Bolts

The total for all that doesn't make sense when you look at the HP you're going to gain. The money you spend on that could go far in getting you some bolt ons.

If you're serious about getting any speed out of your car, I'd definately recommend a 5spd. You can look at dropping .5 - 1 second off your quarter time comparted to an auto.
