Re: z28 model years
nah.. You wont find a TPI Z28 with a 5speed.. Its common to do a T56 6 speed swap though, so there is a lot of info available if he's interested in doing the switch.. The 350TPI was available from 86-92

Re: z28 model years
Yup. Unless he can find a car that has had the swap done to it already.

Re: z28 model years
350 tpis came out in 87 and they were never offered with anything but automatic. I would get a 305 tpi manual car and drop a bigger engine into that.

Re: z28 model years
the 350 tpi only had like 10-15 more hp anyway.

Re: z28 model years
Tranny vs. Another car and engine swap = Both expensive , IF you're on a tight budget don't bother , 15 Hp really isn't worth that much.

Re: z28 model years
I believe they could run high 14s or low 15s and theres still lots of aftermarket parts available for the 305.

there were 50 produced in 86 with a 350TPI.. And ive never done it, so im not speaking from experience, But as far as I know, the T5 speed tranny in the camaros will not hold up to a 350.. If it were me, Ide buy a 350TPI auto.. and drive it around til I accumulated all the parts and $$ to do a T56 swap.. 5.7s are better for re-sale, easier to get power out of, and ive even gotten better fuel economy out of my 5.7 than the 305's..

Sure GM made 50 of them in 1986 but they were probably destroyed because no one has ever seen an 86 camaro with a 350 tpi motor and if someone had one it would be big news. |

Re: z28 model years
To answer your question. Doing a motor swap is way easier than making a auto into a stick. You have to tear apart the dash to mount a new pedal, ontop of removing the motor to get the tranny out (unless you have a lift in your garage). Just find a doner manual car that has a blown motor and or messed up tranny, get a crate motor and a good tranny, and boom. Power to go.

Re: z28 model years
I did a auto - stick swap in my 1990 Subaru XT6 2.7 and it was a pain in the ass. Infact the biggest pain in the ass I have ever had to deal with in my life related to vehicles. Aside from fixing a friends 2.8 4x4 s-10 ( wanted me to replaces crank bearings withou taking the engine out -front anxle = In the way. - )

There has been a lot of guys droppin' T56's into their 3rd Gens without too much complaint.. And there is a lot of info and conversion parts available to make it as hassle free as possible.. And even if he did buy a crate 350, or did an engine swap instead.. he still needs a manual tranny that will hold the power.. a T56.. so with or without a new engine or engine swap, if he Wants a 350, and wants a manual he'l havto do a T56 swap..
