Fuel Gauge Inaccurate?

I've had my 97 for 15mos, ~30k (bought59k, now 89k). One evening, the gas gauge went a little wacky (top to bottom, bouncy around (only a few seconds). Since then the gauge reads overfull for about 120 miles (only about 350 range), then moves reasonably until 3/8 tank mark, then it hits below E in about 35 miles. This happened so fast the first time, I literally coasted into a gas station off of the interstate after I completely ran out of gas.

Anyway, I've read the posts regarding wacky gauges bouncy around, but nothing about inaccurate gauges. Is there any way to reset the sensor? Can I pull/reinsert any fuses to get this to reset? Any other ideas on the source of the problem?

Needless to say, I pay closer attention to mileage than the gauge these days, and fill-up more often.

Thanks as always.

Brian

Re: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate?

I think I read that if you fill -up this will reset the gage...

Rebel, thanks for the reply. I have filled up 4-5 times since this started, with no improvement. Maybe over time things will improve. I am wondering if I need to fill up, then disconnect (and ground) the sending unit, or other connections to get this to reset?

Anyone esle?

Thanks again.

Brian.

Have the fuse & sending unit checked out. did you have a fuel pump recently installed?

Rebel,

No fuel pump, fuse is fine, and not sure how to "check out" the sending unit.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks.

Re: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate?

I have two 95's. One runs out of gas as soon as the needle hits the first orange line, and the other goes all the way to E. I have not ran that one empty. Both gauges drop from 1/4 tank to the orange lines VERY quickly.

Re: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate?

Brian... I'm sorry to say that I don't have much to add here except that my "new" 97 Aurora is doing the exact same thing you describe here. I've had my 97 for 2 weeks; it has 115K miles on it. Just as you described, the gas gauge went a from top to bottom, bounced around for a few seconds and since then the gauge reads overfull. I knew I was low on fuel at the time so I got into the station before running out, but I fear that it will continue to happen and one day I won't be so lucky.

I'll look around and post a solution here if I find anything. Please let me know if you discover the problem. Thanks!

Welcome to AF.

Sorry but please check the date of the last post. This thread is 2 years old. If the date of the last post is over 3 months then do not resurrect it.

I would recommend starting a new thread/post concerning your problem. Thread closed.
