Update on "front end syndrome"
I must confess....the large part of my problem with directional instability -- the car would go anywhere – (as mentioned in former posting ) that I had corrected by returning from 215-70 tires to 205-70 – was basically caused by a worn out lower table ball joint that I would stubbornly consider as "good" because it had been replaced....a few years before.
But, the higher tire did act on the "scrub angle" and indeed intensely exacerbated the problem. It really seems that this modified scrub angle would place the ball joint in a "no stress no definite" position , thus it would go anywhere under any slight variation in lateral forces; with the lower tire , there would result a definite side force component that kept the ball joint steady on one side only.
Ahh...severe "clunk" gone too...Total count in last 3 months: 2 ball joints, one front hub assembly.
next to come: exhaust donut seal.
