Doing 70...engines cuts out...sometimes it catches back on...
The last few days have been tough....here's the deal...I have a 98 JGC with 115,000 miles.
I drive about 55 miles each morning and the Jeep sits about 10 hours and I drive back 55 miles. On the way back, about 40 miles into my trip, the engine "coughs". I'll be driving and all of a sudden the engine has stopped...All lights stay on. At first the engine would kind of catch back on but last night I rolled to a stop on the highway and turned it off. I cranked it back and everything was fine...I went home. I am uneducated on vehicles and don't know what the problem could be. I live in Birmingham, AL. (new to the area) so if anyone can reccomend a dealer or repair shop here I would appreciate it. THANK YOU! |

Re: Doing 70...engines cuts out...sometimes it catches back on...
I know what your problem is. The same thing happened to my wife's 97 JGC last year. It is your fuel pump. We drove 3 hours to Philly, the jeep sat for a week, then while driving home the jeep started stalling while going 70 mph and cut off, stalling and the lights stayed on, after it would sit for a couple of minutes it would start up and drive okay for a couple of miles and then do the same thing. It took us 5 hours to get home. I asked around and found a guy a work with who had the same problem with his jeep and he changed his fuel pump (insided the gas tank), I changed the fuel pump and haven't had a problem since. Actually drove from Pa to Birmingham last Oct and did have a single problem.

One other thing, you can probably change the fuel pump yourself. I received quotes of $600 to do it. I ened up buying a fuel pump myself from a local auto parts store for only $89 and then it took my dad and I 2 hours to install it. It really isn't hard to do, the instruction are included with the new fuel pump, but you will need at least two people lower the fuel tank from the jeep.

Sounds like the Fuel Pump need to do a Pressure Test. Could also be a CPS like 81 says.Shoul do a little Diagnostic Testing before throwing parts at it.
