do code reader do trany code??

Does a code reader give any type of transmisson problem codes? Any information about code readers would be helpfull. I got a loner from the auto store, a $200 type and put it on both my cars and recived no codes. One is a 1999 Suburban 4x4 with 140,000 miles and the other a 2 door Tahoe 4x4 with 165,000 miles. You would think that at least one would have a code. Thanks Dave

What brand is it? My snap on code reader does, but you have to choose tranny codes from a seperate menu. I'm not positive if OTC or the other brands do, but I'm pretty sure they should.

Re: do code reader do trany code??

I do not have one yet. I used one from AutoZone and it did not have tranmisson codes in the book and the book did not talk about tranmission codes. The loner one must not have been able to read tranmission codes or I am sure they would had said something. Thanks Dave

Re: do code reader do trany code??

Looking for a code reader can be a little complicated. You have to ask questions to the retailer as to what the code reader can actually do.I have a code reader myself (given as a gift) that only accesses the PO codes. It doesn't read tranny or body codes.I believe that if you are serious about reading codes other than the engine codes, then you may have to get into scanners. As for the snap-on reader that the previous gentleman refers to may probabaly be more than a couple hundred dollars. But from what I've recently learned about snap-on,their products vary from country to country.Maybe snap-on has a cheap reader that will do tranny codes?Good luck in your quest for a code reader.

if there is a "fault" ,,,,the code should come up,,,,live data scanner works much better,,,,you can see the controls "working",,easier to check "phantom" codes!!

The snap-on scanner is actually a couple thousand dollars, but otc (www.otctools.com) makes a more reasonably priced one that does just as much. I highly recomend getting the pathfinder or troubleshooting modules as that are very helpful at tracing problems.

Re: do code reader do trany code??

I did get a code for "trans slippage", according to the dealer, who then informed me I need a new valve body in the trans. They put a new one in under warranty and its been fine for the last 40k miles. My 97 Burb now has 109k miles on it.
