CARB stuff
I live in California where that whole CARB certification deal is required. Anyways, I was wondering if I had things that weren't CARB certified and got pulled over and they checked the engine, what would happen? Also, what if I got into an accident and an insurance person noticed that I had things that weren't CARB certified, what would happen in that case? Hmm....just thinking bad thoughts I guess....

Uhm... It's not legal for a cop to open your hood is it????
I know it's not in my state.

Re: CARB stuff
Well it is that whole probable cause/getting your permission/warrant...legality issues... (obviously he wont have a warrant and no judge would sign for such a stupid warrant; probable cause is a slippery slope the cops use to their advantage; but most likely they would simply try and coerhse you into opening the hood using open-ended subtle threats...bastards did that to my apartment 2 years ago)
I am not entirely sure what would happen in the second scenario you mentioned, but in the first, I'd assume you would get a ticket, no points, just a fine. A ticket of that sort you can get dropped if you simply take off the aftermarket part, replace it with the stock part, and drive to the court or whereever and have them take a look at it...then you pay $30 for wasting thier time...drive home, and put your aftermarket stuff back on. Just to hazard a guess at the 2nd scenario...the average person wouldn't know the difference between CARB certified parts and non-CARB certified...however, even if they did, you may get the same ticket from above, but I don't think that changes the nature of the accident or who's fault it is...mind you I'm just speculating...I'm not positive.

Re: CARB stuff
Hmm...well, for the second case, I was just wondering if the insurance will still cover the car or not since it's not CARB certified. Sorry, I should have made that more clear...

Re: CARB stuff
I just caught wind of this one....hehe
Ok, I'll do my best at this, but since I don't handle the claims aspect of insurance I can't say I'm 100% correct. With aftermarket parts/illegal parts, I could see the insurance company using the fact that they were aftermarket/illegal as a way to deny the claim (if they were being pricks about it) But if push comes to shove, I'm sure that they would still cover the claim. They can't write tickets or anything, so don't have to worry about that. I 100% plan on putting a stillen race pipe in my vehicle, which is totally illegal. I live in Iowa, and there is no emmisions testing (hehe) if I get into an accident or whatever, I could not see a way how they could deny a claim regarding that. Honestly I don't think you really have too much to worry about.

If your car is "moddifed" in anyway. if you install anything on your vehicle which is not factory, anything, even a radio. the insurance company retains the right to deny you coverage. If you moddify your car and lie about it and then crash, and the company finds out it was modded, they can deny responsability based on "misrepresentation". If you insure your car bone stock and mod it, then 6 months later go to re-new the contract and the insurance company wishes to update the photos of the vehicle and see mods.....they can deny the re-newal. in most cases the insurance company will still insure you but clearly state that in the event of a crash, any of your aftermarket goods (radio, rims, spoiler, H.I.D., bodykit) is damaged, they will only cover you for the stock parts. say you crash and bend your $750.00 rim, the insurance company will replace it with a factory rim.

Re: CARB stuff
ok off the phone
![]() ok actually he's kinda wrong, not totally. first of all, if you mod your car, you can add it as a customization, and it will be covered. however, some mods the insurance company will be "wtf" about. ie: "yeah I upgraded my turbos"...... but you can tint your windows, put rims on, put an aftermarket stereo system, and add that as a customization, and it's covered in a loss. second of all, I have never heard of an insurance company that would require an inspection at renewal for pictures. the only reason they would need that is if there was a claim on the vehicle or something.

You the man Gateway, thanks for clearing it up.
Mercury Insurance Group denied me coverage on my eclipse 2 years ago cause according to them it was "moddified for street racing". I took em to court and they lost cause all my mods where done after I signed the contract with em. If I had modded the car prior to signing and then lied about it on the application then I would of been screwed. Mercury has a list of stuff that if you add to your car then they will not cover you, I had a sway bar and intake which was mentioned in thier list but they lost the case and instead of paying me the $2000 that the car was worth they ended up forking 16K over , HAHAHAHAHA but yeah that crap I never wanna go through again!

Re: CARB stuff
Whoa Musashi3000GT, good deal. Hehe
Okay guys, thanks for all the help. I feel a bit "safer" now as far as modding goes now. I'm not planning to get pulled over or into an accident, but you never know so I just wanted to be safe if anything happens. Yeah, I'm paranoid. LOL
