Cool '88 Ninety Eight power door problems!

My brother gave me this car,and I had to had the MAF sensor replaced. One of the back doors did not open before this, now both back doors will not open!! I checked all the fuses, but on the fuse box,it says for additional fuses, remove the right sound insulator.I have No clue!! Or does it even matter??? When I push the lock-un-lock button from the drivers control, the buttons go up and down, but that's all they do.Any info would be Greatly Appericated!!!

Re: '88 Ninety Eight power door problems!

This is a commom problem with these cars. I once owned an 87 Ninty Eight and one of the rear doors did develope the same trouble. The lock appeared to work fine and the buttons did move just as you mentioned but still the door didn't open. I took it to the auto shop and apparenty the lock motor was all rusted and gunked-up with dirt and grease. The mechanic did fix it so it could open but only locked/unlocked manually. The power lock was useless after that. I didn't bother get a new lock motor for it but I'm sure it's not much more work to get one put in at the same time.

I will warn you that in order to get the door open it had to be done from the inside which meant that the panel had to be pulled off. With the door already closed it resulted in some slight damage to the panel. It got bent from pulling on it and occasionally needed to be pushed back into place along the top edge where it tucks under the crome that runs along the edge of the window.

It's a very crappy problem, I hope you get it worked out.

Really, that is awesome. I had no clue it could be fixed through the trunk. I'll have to keep that in mind if it ever happens with my current Eighty Eight. Isn't it great when things work out?...

Later,

P.S, Any idea where in the trunk they went in from?...Was there any damage at all?...

Re: '88 Ninety Eight power door problems!

I just wanted to add my experiences with my '87 LeSabre (linked from there). The problem was with the outside doorhandle pushbutton, which would make the inside mechanism for it stick when depressed completely, and would make the door be stuck closed, even though the lock mechanism worked. After removing the inside of the door and putting on a bit of penetrating oil and working it in (after, of course, figuring out that the outside button was the issue, since the inside handle worked after fixing but one use of the outside one would get it stuck again), it works fine.
