Question Help finding my ECU

I have a 98 cavilier and the engine light came on. I have look to see what could be happing, but when the alternator was replaced the engine light went out for 3 days. I had hoped the problem was solved, but now the light came back on. Where is the ECU on the 98 two door 2.2 and can an auto store plug in and give me what is happening inside?

its pretty easy, but you have to take the inner fenderwells out and maybe the front facia or at least get it in the air

you definately have to take out the inner fenderwells though.. 2 bolts hold it in and they are easy to get to, the puter is wrapped in some rubber stuff, splash shields if you wish. so if you dont see it look a bit harder but it is in the right side fender well closer to the front of the car..

The two 98 cavaliers I have seen have the ecu located under the dash next to the drivers left foot. It's very easy to get to and is just clipped into a bracket.Although there should be a plug somewhere to plug into to pull the codes ,But I don't know where that is.You may want to check the alternator that was put in to make sure it is working properly. The auto parts store will do that for you,I'm not sure that they will pull the fault codes from the ecu for you.

Re: Help finding my ECU

the reason the light went off 4 a couple days after the alt. was installed was proly cuz the battery was dis connected. the box on a 98 thats under dash is the ABS box, not the ECU. the ecu is under the pass side fender well. if u remove the pass side headlight u can see it (silver box,has the word DELCO printed on it). the diagnostics plug in is located directly under steering column(black plug).u dont hav to take ecu out 2 get the code. you take it to autozone & get the code for free & get the light reset(cutoff).
