Re: head gasket

not sure about the 4g63 but usually for 4 cyls they cost about 80 bucks for the gasket. install is another story since you have to take so much stuff off. if you do it yourself its cheaper. but you still need to buy gaskets for everything else you disconnect to do the headgasket.

Re: head gasket

A stock HG is prefered by many many poeple up to 30 psi boost. To use a metal gasket you have to have a finish grain specific to that type of gasket or it doesnt work. Stock gasket is soft and will conform. If you are builing up a motor from scrath its easy to have the head and block resurfaced for use with the metal gaskets though. I have had great luck with the ralliart Mitsu MLS gasket (Multi Layer Steel).

The problem with a HG swap is you really should to the tbelt and water pump parts job at the same time, since you have to go through it all anyway. If you know those parts are low mileage and its not worth redoing it all, you can do a HG swap WITHOUT disturbing the timing belt. You use the stock tensioner tool to put slack in the tebelt (and to keep the tensioner from expanding). Ziptie the belt to the cam gears, and remove the gears from the cams. They can only go on one way (dowel pins) so there is no chance for errror. Keep the belt tied to the hood so it doesnt slip on the crank pulley. With this method, I could do a HG swap on my car in 2 hours. But there are risks involved, and its important to understand them all before tying methods like these. For the average guy though, all the tbelt stuff most likely needs to be replaced anyway...

The 2gNT cars are a little easier since the tbelt job isnt bad, and there isnt as much BS to get out of the way. Never done one myself, but my brother does them on his lunch break...

Re: head gasket

silvergtr43: it usually cost 600+ for the head gasket and labor to install it. most of the people here were talking just the prices for the parts
