Just bought a 93 Altima, need advice/tips/info/etc..
I was looking for something to replace my crappy Geo Metro, and I spotted a 93 Altima in the newspaper for $650. I didn't think it would be very good but I went for a lookover anyway. It's a white 5 speed GXE with 352000 kms on it. I started it up after getting a boost (battery is no good), it didn't start right away because it's been sitting for a while. Once I got it started and let it idle for a bit, I noticed a bit of exhaust noise from somewhere in the engine bay. No problem, a 650 dollar car is going to need some work anyway. The motor itself is good and quiet, not one rattle or knock that I could hear. I took it for a little drive up the street, I didn't go far because the car isn't registered or safety inspected. Clutch is worn but works smoothly, gearshift works fine. Brakes are going to need some work, it's been sitting for a while and the rotors are major rusty, I hope the brake lines are alright. I didn't have a chance to check how well they work because I didn't want to get going too fast, but the handbrake works good. The tires, although worn, will do me for probably a year or so, I didn't notice what brand they were. The suspension itself is fine, although there's some bar or whatever it's called in the rear suspension that'll need to be welded, it's not broke but it's came apart or something, my dad says he can fix it. As far as I can tell, all the car's gadgets work, the windows and door locks all work, cruise control works, A/C still works, Casette/Cd player/radio works fine, but the antenna is broke off. There is a problem with the tach, when I started the engine, the tach wasn't reading at all. After a bit, it started jumping all over the place, finally it settled itself down and was reading properly, anyone know what could cause this? The engine is going to need a tune-up, it idles a bit rough. I offered the guy $500, and he accepted. I won't be bringing it home for about a week though, I need to gather up some money for a transfer sticker so I can drive it home. The car isn't perfect, but considering what I'm paying, I think I'm getting a good deal. Now, I need some help from you guys. What kind of fuel mileage can I expect from this car? Any special tips or things I should keep an eye out for? Any maintainence hints? Anyone have any specs on the car?
