Question 02 Passat error code P1296

Emissions workshop error light. I had the error code read at a parts store. The error code is P1296. What is this error?

02 Passat with V6.

It's a cooling system malfunction code. Either the car took too long to reach operating temp (like a stuck thermostat) or is getting bad readings from the temp sensor. It's the same unit as for the gauge but a different part sends a signal to the ECM, so the gauge ma read fine.

volkswgen has a huge problem with the coolant temperature sensors in alot of there cars. the coolant temperature sensor will read -40 degrees celcuis for a second or two and some times longer. this is what sets the fault code. have the coolant temperature sensor replaced the problem will be solved.

Thanks for the reply. The gage reads normal opperating temperature. I will replace the sensor and see what happens. Otherwise, the car runs fine.
