Question Delaying 2001 Elantra

Hi,
I recently purchased a used 2001 Hyundai Elantra GLS. It has 63k miles on it and has a 4-Cyl. 2.0 Liter engine. My problem is that whenever I first start the car in the morning, there is a delay when I step on the gas to when it accelerates. After the first minute or so the problem goes away and the car works normally and the problem usually doesn't occur for the rest of the day. I read from ALLDATA that there was a Technical Service Bulletin that seemed to describe my problem. The TSB number was 04-36-004, issued on APR 04, and the title is Engine Controls - Warm Ambient Temp. Cold Start Stumble. Has anyone else had this problem, I was just wondering if I could fix this problem myself, or if I really should take this to a shop to get it fixed. And how much might something like this cost whether I am fixing it myself or have it looked at. Thanks,
Arthur

Re: Delaying 2001 Elantra

I recently went to the dealership for this same problem on my 2002. The problem is that the TSB lists the problem occurring at about 3800 RPMs not when the car is in 1st gear and you're accelerating. My dealership told me to my dissatisfaction that there was no TSB for it and they could not locate the problem while they had my car the entire day. They simply told me that I'd have to wait until it got worse before they could try and diagnose it.

If you find anything out please let us, especially me know.

Re: Delaying 2001 Elantra

hello

There is a tsb for this vechicle and it involves updating the software in the ecu Bulletin number 04-36-004

The reflash will fix 2 things . Go to hmaservice.com enter your vechicle and from pull down menue then on the left side of screen tsb's will list it is listen under engin electrical .

I have had a lot of sucess w this reflash

Even if your vechicle is out of waranty they dealer may sill be able to do the reflash at no cost at least at m dealer ship we do this as a customer stasifaction thing below is a copy and past of the bulletin

2001-2003 ELANTRA ECM REPROGRAMMING FOR
WARM AMBIENT COLD START STUMBLE (WACSS) AND
ENGINE HESITATION AT APPROXIMATELY 3800 RPM
DESCRIPTION:
Some 2001-2003 MY Elantra vehicles may experience one or both of the following
symptoms:
1. Warm ambient cold start stumble (WACSS). When the weather is hot and humid,
the engine may hesitate for a short time after an initial cold start (typically, the first
start in the morning).
2. Engine hesitates at 3800 to 4000 rpm.
This bulletin describes a procedure for updating the Engine Control Module (ECM) to
correct the above conditions by using the Hi-Scan Pro.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
• Model: 2001-2003 ELANTRA vehicles
• Affected vehicle production date range:
-- 4 Door: Produced through June 14, 2003
-- 5 Door: Produced through June 10, 2003

Re: Delaying 2001 Elantra

Right andrew but the problem he and I are having isn't at 3800-4000 RPM. It's when you first accelerate in the morning which isn't at that high of RPM. Is this TSB wrong and it will fix a low RPM hesitation?

Re: Delaying 2001 Elantra

I understand the confusion

if you read carefully you will see it fixes 2 concerns

1) A hesitation on initial cold start (This is a rough idle feeling when you first start vechicle)

2) engine hesitation at 3800 rpm

I have had this reflash fix what i call morning sickness .

Re: Delaying 2001 Elantra

I can't speak for konfused but it seems to me that if we are both dealing with the same problem then the TSB doesn't address the issue. =( I don't have a rough idle feeling when I first start it. Everything feels normal. However when I push on the accelerator the car won't accelerate for about 3 seconds and then it kicks in. This explains why the dealership told me they couldn't identify the problem. =(
