1989 clutch engagement problems

I just got a 1989 3/4 ton 4x4 with manual trans. I have to push the clutch all the way to the floor and it seems like Im only getting the last inch of pedal travel to actually allow me to shift into gear. I notice this has a clutch resevoir so that tells me this has a hydraulic clutch. Is there any type of adjustment on the clutch fork. Am I looking at master or slave cylinder problems? Or maybe a simple bleed job would do.

Any help would certainly be appreciated. I dont think I have any clutch plate, throw out bearing problems, it just feels like more of an adjustment problem.

Re: 1989 clutch engagement problems

Here is where I would start:
1. Remove the slave mastercylinder from the trans. and check to see if the pin is bent or worn.
2. If that seems ok, then check the clutch mastercylinder fluid level and bleed the system.
If that does not take care of the problem, it could be the clutch mastercyl. going bad, or a bent clutch fork. Thats as far as I can take ya. Good luck, let us know what you find.

Re: 1989 clutch engagement problems

If I'm not mistaken, there is no adjustment on the '89.

To repeat joe92k1500, check the travel on the slave cylinder while someone depresses the clutch. Make sure that you have chocked your wheels. Ensure that the slave is moving smoothly and with no binds, have seen this several times.

If you have to travel that far to release the clutch and depending on the miles, the pressure plate might be going bad. The diaphragm or the fingers wear out and require more travel to disengage.
