body panels removable?

I was wondering if most of the body panels for a 89 2-door coupe GP could be removed and replaced with those from another car. I was wondering specifically about the rear driverside quarterpanel (I guess that's what it's called). does it have to be cut and welded back on, or are there rivets, bolts, or whatever that would make it easier? I was recently involved in a wreck and would like to know if there is a possibility of repair. Thanks for any advise.

Re: body panels removable?

Has to be cut, leaded and filled. Better be damn good to try.

It'd be cool if I knew how to do it, and had the resources to get it done. I just had the car painted last March, and I finally got it running great. Last spring I dumped $750+ into it to fix a problem it had. The damage isn't too bad, but it's still a shame, you know. I reckon I'll just drive her til she develops an expensive problem, then get something else...like a T/A perhaps...

If it's not "that bad". Why don't you pull it out the best you can, and fill it in? Has to look better then it does now.

I wish it were that simple. I was rear-ended and when the truck hit me, his bumper pushed in the rear left corner of the car. There is not really a dent, more like a "repositioning" of that corner. If you look at the car from behind it, it's really obvious that one side of the rear is higher than the other.

Because of that type of damage, I was positive it would take more than a simple straightening of the body. That corner of the trunk is also crumpled. It would take probably alot of pounding, cutting, filling, and whatever else to get this car looking straight.

I've come to realize that it's not worth the time, money, and effort to do that kinda work to it. The car was purchased originally so I could have something more fuel efficient (than a '76 F-100) to drive to school and work. I love the car (it was my first 5-speed), but it's really not worth it.

Thanks for the advise though, I was really just curious about if and how that section of the body could be removed.

Re: body panels removable?

Do you have insurance? Why not take it in and have them say the car is totaled? Or atleast get a check for the damage?

I hate to say it, but you could ask a lawyer. Good luck.
