Unhappy Exhaust Smoke

Hi, Hope someone can give me some advice - I have an '89 MkIII turbo.

Very occasionaly after running it on the turbo - if I change down a gear I get some grey/white smoke from the exhaust. This is not repeated if i rev the engine - even quite hard (never managed to get any smoke from it by revving it up)

However I sometimes get a "pop" from the exhaust as though it's pushing too much fuel through when i'm letting the car slow down under engine breaking.

Can anyone give me some advice - is the car just badly set up or is my turbo on the way out.

Hope someone can help

Regards to all!!

No mods other than a stainless exhaust (probably doesn't provide that much back pressure though)

that would depend on the exhaust and what you consider exhaust. so i assume that means your still using the stock cat and downpipe correct?

how long has this been going on?

has the check engine light come on?

anything youve done as far as maintenance recently?
