Hate deer? Me too!

I think I found a solution. It saved my ass last night.

Everyone knows hitting a deer sucks. They get frozen in your headlights and just stand there, waiting to come through your windshield. I don't know what they think cars are; maybe they think they're some kind of alien mothership, come to take them to their home planet, like the Heaven's Gate cult members of the animal kingdom. And, if you DO manage to stop in time or swerve out of the way, as often as not the goddamned thing will run into YOU.

Hitting deer where I live is pretty common, so I've been in this situation before. 11:30 pm, 65 mph on a back road, and POW. So when it happened last night, I decided to try something new: Instead of braking (which we all know is futile 90% of the time), I slammed in the clutch and floored the gas. Redline.

In a split second, my car went from friendly mother ship to screaming killer monster, and the deer didn't want any part of it. As soon as it heard that crazy fucking scream, the deer HAULED ASS back into the woods. Broke right out of that headlight hypnosis and that bitch was GONE. Believe you me, a deer can dodge a car much better than a car can dodge a deer. I didn't have to swerve or brake or anything. It was beautiful.

Anyway, just thought I would share that, for those of you who have this problem. I know it goes against all instinct, but if all else fails, clutch and floor it.

And for all those with automatics... keep hitting deer, I guess.

Not that you'd want to ruin your paint or bumper, but there are these whissle things you can bolt into your bumper and scares the deer away. They look like tiny airplane engines and whissle in the wind while your going down the road.

This is too true. My friend swerved out of the way of a deer and the fucker took off and nailed his passenger side door and broke the mirror and left a few dents in the door. I say we should just have deer hunting season year around.

I couldnt imagine hitting a deer. Where do you all live that these deer are just dancing on the highways ? I have never even seen a deer where I am from.

Re: Hate deer? Me too!

I live in Orange County, New York (*sigh*, YES, the place where the "American Choppers" guys live...) and we have TONS of deer.

I've heard those whistle things don't really work; a guy I know has a body shop, and he laughs his ass off every time they tow in a car that has those things on the bumper. But you're right; I wouldn't want to ruin the look of my car by sticking them on there anyway.

My opinion, if you know your going to hit it, floor it anyway. See how far you can launch that thing.

Re: Hate deer? Me too!

most insurance companies only cover your damages if you do hit the deer too. If you swerve and miss it and end up hitting a tree or going into a ditch or something they won't cover your damages.

yeah. oddly enough, if you hit the deer and wreck your car, it's an "Act of nature"... but if you miss the deer, and hit a telephone pole, or ditch the car, it's "loss of control" and you get cited.

I know that the ONLY reason i hit mine was that it was behind a blind turn- i had only about 4-6 second's warning between the time i saw the deer and when i hit it, and belive me, that's NOT enough. >_<

you can see the damage the car took, and my current work on it, at http://www.digitalcave.org/modules/gallery/civic

i'm in ohio, and the damn things are just oversized mice, they are EVERYWHERE. i've seen 'em downtown in the mid-sized town i live in... walking down the street.

makes me want to be a hunter- REVENGE!

That YMCA on northern by main street, near the police department. KFC on Northern, IHOP, Whitestone Lanes, Multiplex Cinemas, Smiles? FUCK!!! I HATE TAMPA!!!! I WANNA GO BACK! I plan to make a drive up there before december. Still dont know if I'm taking my GSR or civic. Maybe we could meet.
